NER has been using AXware for the last several years, and all I have heard from the last T&S chair is just how terrible the software is an how little it could actually do. Having successfully used TS98 with THSCC (and suffered the initial learning curve), I just couldn't believe this was really the case.

Because the Red Sox were in the World Series, a former NER autocrosser was back in town this weekend in case there was a game 6 or 7. His current club in San Diego uses AXware networked to 3 different computers, so needless to say, he knows how to make it work. He got us up and going and eased the learning curve considerably. Yay!

I was AMAZED at how user friendly it was. Frankly, as the computer operator, I was bored. It takes times right from the JACircuts box. You are able to que cars up ahead of when they actually leave the start line. If car 39 comes to the line and you can't read the class, you are given a list of classes from which to choose, and if you guess the wrong one, you can go back and guess again till you find the right car description. It provides reports for auditing (in the order the runs occured), overall results, pax lists, and raw time lists standard. You can easily update information on the fly, even car numbers and classes.

This is not a suggestion to change TS98, only a positive experience I had with this system after hearing numerous bad things about it from the previous chair. If THSCC ever wants to replace the TS98 software, I suggest you guys at least take a look at AXware.

Diane

ps - Theoretically, we can download a AXware preformatted file from MyAutoEvents.com for pre-registration that will load right into AXware. Haven't tried that yet, but it's on my list for first thing next season. I'll post results/issues when we give it a try.

My experience mimics yours Dianne. I have NEVER done any T&S with THSCC and within a few hours I was the NCR SCCA T&S Guru.

I have AXWare loaded onto my laptop, I can bring it for show and tell.

Ryan,

Can you bring your computer with you this weekend or to the G'ville event. I'm interested in seeing what AXWare can do.

I looked at AXware in, lesse, March of 2003, and had several rounds of emails with Mr. AXware, Vitek Boruvka. At that time, there were a few issues that we weren't going to be able to overcome to provide the capabilities we've become used to in this club. Primary being:
  • that it had a fixed set of reports, if we wanted something crazy (eg. team challenge), you were SOL.
  • the reports were also fixed in terms of appearance- if you don't like their layout, choice of fonts or colors, you were SOL.
I've heard it said lately that they've added real database support (needed for crazy scoring ideas), so I may have to write to Vitek again and ask. Checking his site quickly doesn't give me the feeling that things are really different, but I know that doesn't always mean anything.

Thanks for the heads-up, and relating the experience. We are looking for better T&S software. For all its shortcomings, though, TS98 can be stretched and pulled like taffy, and right now the "original" program is only 1 part of a much larger system. So far it's just been hard to find something that meets all our needs... :(

My understanding is that he's fixed a lot of stuff in the last year or so... we were running version ...16e this weekend.

Can't speak to the flexibility of the report stuff. We only need to class results, pax results, and raw results on a regular basis, so for NER I think the standard ones will work for us. I don't think anyone is particularly picky about the format.

Here's what we got from this weekend format-wise:

Class: http://www.ner.org/soloII/solo2004/Team ... ge_fin.htm
Pax: http://www.ner.org/soloII/solo2004/Team ... ge_pax.htm
Raw: http://www.ner.org/soloII/solo2004/Team ... ge_raw.htm

(No NOVICE classes this event. Also, people classes their cars strangely due to the "Team Challenge" we were running. Jaosn and I were in the same car but one in BS and the other in AP.)

Yeah, I see they're using v5.10.016d (or so says the HTML header)- I think I tested 4.0.something. I see they're using style sheets now, that's worth something, but I'll have to ask V about the database thing.

OT- I see Charlie Levesque's still driving pretty well- he owned a garage (and served as selectman) when I lived in Lyndeborough, NH. He and his son were driving some old (like 1960s-vintage) green fromula car in BM at the time, IIRC.

He's got an AP car these days. Something with no top/windshield that looks from the front like it's smiling. :) Jason L was driving one of Chang's civics this weekend (in SM with a GSR motor). He beat the car owner. Can't recall what he's usually in. I think it's something in a Prepared class.

Ryan - Have you tried MyAutoEvents preregistration? Just curious what the file looks like.

Yes, I have done 3 events with MAE.com. Its not bad, just a simple .txt file if my memory serves correct.

Ryan,

Can I talk you into sending me one of those files so I can check it out?

solots@ner.org or r2x@mindspring.com

Diane
