I know several people were supposed to be there testing new cars.

Wes Eargle was autocrossing his Miata for the first time, trying to figure out if it is any better than a Contour. Hopefully the old busted Toyo's still had a little grip.

Rumor is Eric Peterson was going to be trying out the new-to-him Barnes Miata. How did that go?

I know Aaron was going to be there offending people as usual :)

Anyone else?

Scott

I re-installed the Konis and ground controls on the blue RS and went up to mangle some cones. It wasn't pretty, but it was fun. Hopefully I got all the badness out of my system so I can concentrate on going fast next weekend.

The course was pretty good, but it was TIGHT in a couple of places - as in, going from the top of second gear to creeeeeping through stuff, and back to the top again. If those two places had been more open, the course would've flowed really well & been a lot more fun. Also, there was an 8-cone slalom.

I drove on the stock STi tires I bought from Dan, and was running raw times about equal to Aaron's, but I hit a lot of cones. The one run I didn't cone, I was really slooooowwwwww. I tried to blame the tires, but later admitted it was my fault.

Anybody else hit the big cone in the Chicago box, or was it just me?

The Toyos are neither old nor busted, spank you very much :P

I drove like crap, evidently I've been relying on torque rather than momentum. Better to learn that at another group's event ...

Congrats to Eric and Chris Peterson (1 & 2 in CS) Shawn Whipple (1/1 DS  ) Les Davis (3 CSP) Aaron Buckley and Kevin Allen (1 & 2 in STS) for stealing much wood.

Dangit, at least others can be elite

The course was pretty decent, it had a good variety of features. As Kevin said, one featue was a little too tight...other than that it was good. They only used the main runway, which worked well....though I missed hauling *** through the big crossover.

The new to me Miata felt good, but I have a lot to learn (since it feels so much different than the Spyder) before I can start to exploit the strong points of the car. I guess one downside of running the same car for so long is that it takes a while to readjust to something different. Also, have to adjust to life without ABS.

I'm thinking since Buckley and Kevin Allen were right behind me on raw time that they probably took 1-2 on the Pax - they were really flying. Anyone know how that worked out. El Presidente Whipple, must have been pretty high up as well. Chris was only 5 tenths behind me, so she kept asking me on the way home if "I was hearing her footsteps in my sleep?" It looks like I'm on the verge of becoming the 2nd fastest driver in my house :-)

That's okay, Eric. At least you have poker to fall back on.

*cough*

I really hope for everybody else's sake that my fastest  run didn't take 2nd in PAX - that would be a very sad thing, indeed. (I wasn't even expecting a top ten.)

Oh, forgot to mention this earlier - I was confused as to why I wasn't hitting the rev limiter more often, even with the stock-diameter tires. Car felt sluggish out on the street, too. Got home & started looking at stuff to see if anything was wrong, and when I opened up my air cleaner it looked like a rat's nest in there.

Note to self: self, when you go flying through fields sucking up grass, bugs & all sorts of other debris, CLEAN THE FILTER AFTERWARD!!! The filter is currently drying out on the kitchen counter awaiting re-oiling, after being washed & vacuumed last night.

I thought it was a good event. The course was actually a lot of fun but the two tight sections were a little bit painful. Of course, all you had to do was slow down for them and they weren't that bad. The 8 cone slalom was fun although, I think I only drove it well once out of 4 runs :(

Organizationally they did very well. They do some things differently than THSCC but they still had the bases covered.

From a safety point of view I wasn't crazy about the overlapping of cars on the runway at the same time. It actually wasn't bad if the 2nd car eft the line when it was supposed to, but if they sat there for 5 seconds then it got kinda hairy. I guess it worked out ok since nobody ran into each other.

On other notes, it was a lot of fun get the Type R out and drive it in anger again. Funny thing is the car felt really tight compared to what I remember. I guess I've adapted to the WRX being a lot looser? I managed to get 1 decent run in, but I'm not sure how that that left me in the PAX.

Eric was fast in the Miata and if that's the speed he's running when he's getting used the car watch out once he get adjust to it. Chris was fast in the Miata as well, it won't be long before she's beating Eric regularly :D Aaron showed up with some shaved FK451's on the front of the Celica and it looked like they were working well for him.

Overall a fun day.

Shawn

They had a similar offset last time I went to Danville. It bothered me a bit too

I thought it turned out to be a pretty fun day also. The course was challenging to me (being only my 4th event), especially the 2 tight parts. I DNFed 3 out of 4 times, and I still can't figure out where it happened! :x

Thanks to Aaron, Kevin, Shawn, and the other Tarheel members that weren't elitist a-holes to me since I'm kinda new.

It had to be 99% car - the driver had major suckage.

Nice going on the FTPAX, Aaron!

Funny thing is, both of us felt like we could've run a 50.x if we had taken our head out of our ass. Must've been an ST* course or something... :?

You've got a yellow car that automatically gets you into the "in" crowd.

Speaking of being elitist, I've got to slip into that mode here for a minute and say look at all the Tarheel folks in the top of the PAX.
