Who defines "absurdity"? :D

The protest committee. It should be done exactly the way they did it. I was happy to see common sense prevail. I think they had the right philosophy when making their decision, instead of just being mindless rule nazis.

Sorry to hijack the thread

Please define "followed to the point of absurdity".

Followed to the point where the enforcement of the rule is disqualifiying someone who has not violated the reason why the rule was made.

Yes, the rules do exist in a "black and white" form. But you can see that the "spirit of the rule" does live both nationally per Tom's case and locally per Mike's comments about how things really work here in our club.

I agree, and I think that's great. That wasn't my point. Reread my response to Mike.

Quote:
This is a sport with a lot of rules and talk about how to interpret and follow them. You ARE going to find a bunch of people talking about how best to follow the rules to the letter. Any talk about how to bend the rules is NEVER going to get much support. Slamming people who try to follow the rules is not going to get you much support either.

ok, I am getting off my soapbox now. 8)

I'm not advocating bending the rules at all. And I'm not slamming the people that are following the rules. I am slamming the people whose anal retentiveness causes people who are genuinely trying to follow the rules to be disqualified anyway. And once again, I'm not saying this officially happens often in our club, but it does seem to get brought up on this board now and then.

I know the answer - 2 years ago at Laurinburg. "STS" car protested for carbon fiber hood & bumped up to SM. It was Peter Baio in the riceboy white & carbon fiber Impreza.

What's even funnier is that the winner that day (me) had several illegal items which were not blatantly obvious by looking at the car (like a carbon fiber hood is). - I didn't know they were illegal at the time. :angelslip:

Actually I don't think we followed our official protest procedure... I think he was asked/told that he wasn't supposed to be in STS. It was our (the officers') mistake in not following our own rules. I don't recall all the details though.

Was it an "official" protest involving club officers, or did the compeditors just get together and tell him he belonged in SM?

I ask because I was about to answer "Before my time." which began in Aug 1997.

Hum...

Tom and Shawn and Speed TV and people on various lists say Tom won.

The original results showed Tom winning. The results posted later on the 15th have Tom's time the same as earlier but have an incorrect time for the guy shown in the lead. Incorrect in that the fastest daily times add up to about 2 seconds slower than the total shown. Since Tom probably got his Championship Trophy Wednesday night at the first banquet I would say he is the Champ.

I've talked to Tom on the phone and I didn't hear mention of any "they took my trophy" so I'm pretty sure he's the man. :)
