I just got an Email from CCR that was a reminder that the 24 hour autocross is coming up soon.

You can find more information at the following link.

http://www.ccrsolo2.org/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=85

It's a good time and if you've never been to it, it's well worth the effort.

I did it last year for the first time, had a BLAST. And YES, people REALLY do run ALL night long.

It was also the most amusing race of the year, between the "500 hp" ESP Camaro that finished DFL or the WRX wagon that burned up a set of new Hoosiers overnight trying to catch the Talon, it was a BLAST!!!

Just bring PLENTY of tire, your gonna need it, I wish I were going :(

how does the scheduling of that work? I mean, do you do say, 4 runs per group and then cycle workers, like usual and just keep cycling for hours on end?

not sure I could physically handle 24 hrs of auto-x (or even 12). sounds awesome though

IF they are still doing it the same way. The worker shifts are 1 or 2 hours and you sign up for several shifts. They change workers on the top of the hour.

Any time you are not working you can drive or sleep or whatever else you want to do. You can take as many runs as you want but only six are counted in the final scoring. The way they manage this is all the runs are basically fun runs unless you "declare" that your run will be for time before you start your run.

And don't be surprised when there are a lot of folks still in line to drive at 3am.

It will be a Steven Rankins/Kevin Hoff/Tom Hoppe course as well, so it should be fun :)

Let's see... I'm only about 10 miles or so from the site, but that weekend will be well over 800 miles from there... Bummer - AB

...and we had our menacing brake problem to deal with at the time. Flying through the finish lights and having the brake pedal go to the floor was quite disturbing. Oh did I mention the cars waiting to start were directly in front of the finish?

So who is going and are going to camp, get a hotel or just use toothpicks to keep your eyes open? I think I'll forgo Sanford for this trip. Lord knows I need the seat time!

I would never forgo a THSCC event for a CCR event. First and foremeost, it WILL rain for the 24 hour event.

There is a huge difference between quality seat time and quantity of seat time. You are better off with 5 runs at a THSCC event with member help than making 20 runs on your own. Just my .02 worth.

The 24 hours event and the THSCC event are 2 weeks apart, it's not clear to me why you would hav eto do one rather than the other.

And you'd be even better off with 20 runs and member help. Passengers are allowed at the 24-hr and you can have anyone ride along, even your favorite non-CCR member.

Why the acid towards CCR Jim? The club serves a totally different area than Tarheel and (while struggling with officer burnout this season) has achieved quite good operations the last few seasons.

Nothing acid towards CCR. In fact, both Chris Peterson and Geoff Zimmer were kind enough to help me out this past Sunday. They pointed out my experimental driving style was not that good :)

If an inexperienced driver goes to an event and does not know anyone there, it will be tough on them to walk up to a stranger and ask them to ride along. Add to the fact, they may not know who the good drivers are in that club. Regardless of which club we are talking about.

If the individual is comfortable at THSCC, knows THSCC members and the individual could only do one of the two events, he is better off getting 5 runs with instruction than looking at making 20 runs without. Thus the quality versus quantity. Now, if you are volunteering to take the person under your wing and work with him at the event, then he is getting the best of both worlds.

Now I know CCR has no control over the traditional 24 hour event rain :) Even THSCC does not have an in with God. Although sometimes I think we do feel that way ;)

IMHO:
The positives- You can get a LOT of runs in if you want, a great opportunity to do test and tune if the weather cooperates (no hurricane  ) We have made as many as 18 runs EACH at previous events.
Running in the dark is a BLAST!
The late announcement of the event will probably reduce the number of participants = more runs.
The move of the event from CCRs home area of Charlotte to WS may also reduce participation.
For those who haven't done one before, you really owe it to yourself to try it once.

The negatives- JL lot is relatively small and limited in course arrangement due to curbing and islands.
The event tends to be busiest during daylite hours with as few a one run/hr possible. You must sign up for a 2hr work shift per 12 hrs of participation, those savy to the procedures get there very early on Sat to sign up for the first shift on Sat, last shift on Sun when the lines are longest. If you are stuck with work assignments after dark, you'll lose the chance to do the most runs during the best time to run.
Don't leave all your counted runs for the very end of the event or you may not get them in and you'll be very tired and not sharp.
Don't plan on getting much sleep if you want to make very many runs. If you leave the event site for very long you'll miss most of your run time. Bring an alarm clock and nap in the car for 1/2 hr periods.
#1 negative = Hurricane Francis...

That's why 'm asking who's going.

If it rains this weekend maybe it'll chase the rain-gods off for the NCR event in Wilmington-more on that in another post.

I'm skipping the THSCC Sanford event because I'll be there on Sunday in the VW. I'm not going to drive up there in the Miata Saturday, turn around and drive back that night just to do it all over again on Sunday in the VW. One option would be to run the event Saturday in the VW and spend the night, but the yard has to get mowed sometime plus other honeydo's around te house. Autocross is eating a big chunk of my September weekend schedule, and I've got to give up one event. That Saturday just looks like the best option.
