At yesterday's Southeast Div. event in Laurens Steven Rankins from CCR announed at lunch that the 2004 NCAC (State Championships) will be held the 3rd weekend in November at Carowinds. They had to wait until Carowinds closed for the season before the site coud be used, hence the later date. It will be a 2-day event. The Carowinds site is supposed to be quite large. They just confirmed this information so more details will follow. That is everything I know about the event.

Results from the SE Div.

E Stock - Pastorius, won by like 1.5 seconds over some very good drivers. Probably the best performance of the Tarheel crowd. Rob Lupella drove well and was one of the fastest Miata guys in class.

DM - Phil Wehman easily won and drove very well.

STX - Hoppe wins over Mike King (one of the best STX guys in the country)

C Stock - Eric, barely won...by something like .06 total. Chris came in 5th, one out of the trophies. She was sick on Day #1, almost did not drive, and was off the pace....but, was 3rd fastest on Day #2 and smoked most everyone else in the class Sunday.

G Stock - Chuck had some cone trouble that kept him out of a good spot and Donna won GSL (would have been 5th in open)

BS - Rick Butters did a good job in what was a difficult course for the S2000.

I apologize for any mistakes.

Eric

Just want to make sure everybody's informed - I had already talked to Steven Rankins about the NCAC date, and our rallyx that was planned for that weekend will be rescheduled.

And congratulations to all the people who went to Laurens & didn't suck! :D

Nice driving for everyone that went. Carowinds huh? It will be nice to have this event only 20 minutes from home. ;) - AB

Dang! I'm guessing he was diggin' the new setup we, um, accidentally discovered at Laurinburg? 8)

Congrats to everybody else! I wish I could have been there...

This was the first "non-local" event I've been to and it was great! It was fun to pull for other Tarheelers as they competed and, as Eric wrote, there were a few trophies! Congrats to everyone! Jim's final run on day 2 was a thing of beauty.

I carried home a few learning points:

The biggest eye-opener for me was how many really fast people there were, especially the stock classes. I mean REALLY fast.

I must get a set of slicks. Period. Otherwise I am likely to get my clock cleaned at the next event like this.

Finally, the big flowing course we ran the second day was really fun, but fast sweepers like that are new to me - I think the "chicken" factor may have come in to play a couple of times and I left some time behind on them.

All in all it was a super weekend (and without a drop of rain the whole time)!

Phil

We had been having handling issues with our Celi since the Toledo pro, and had been bandaiding it with shock and tire pressures that were getting further and further away from what we had been running. I suspected alignment issues, but we couldn't get an alignment appointment before we left. After Saturday's runs where the car pushed like a pig, we decided to bite the bullet and check our toe settings. Sure enough the rear setting had slipped and was a 1/2" from where it was supposed to be. After we borrowed a large enough wrench to hold the adjuster cams while retightening the adjuster we reset it. It was a totally different car the next day, so much so that I spent my 3 runs finding a workable set-up. We got it handling much better for Donna's runs. I believe that had it been right on Saturday, Donna may have been in the open trophy times.
Congrats again to all the super quick Tarheelers!

This was my first divisional and I got pretty much what I expected - a first hand demonstration of just how much more the car has to give if the driver knows what to do with it. I would like to personally thank Rob and Phil for their support and a great weekend. I would also like to thank Jim and Eric for their suggestions and pointers. Although I couldn't always translate their suggestions into the desired result, I did enough to see that suggestions were on the money and that with a little more experience they will help me become a better driver. All in all, a great weekend.

Congrats to Phil, Rob and Rick for their first big time event. All three drove very well and handled the heat. On Saturday the air temp was in the mid to upper 90's. The asphalt temp was close to 145 degrees!

I hope Rick forgives me for ruining his weekend as Eric has put

Well truth be known "won" is a strong word. The only other person in my class was a very nice girl who was driving her Saturn for only the second time ever without an instructor. Unfortunately she didn't come back the second day...wish she had. She seemed to be enjoying the experience.

Chuck drove really well. He was third early on, the car held him back from staying there. Wish the car had been better on Saturday, but I'm glad we realized what the problem was and acted on it.

Would have liked to be a little closer to John B. and Rob C. in times still. Boy is Jon K. gonna be mad at me when I see him next...I got him again.

Chris had some great runs in CS. Congrats to everyone from THSCC! It was great to see so many there.

Any on-line registering required for the NCAC?

NCAC event at Carowinds? I'm having a flashback to 1990 :)

Should be a nice, big lot, if it's the one that CCR used to rent. Just remember, if you spin, avoid the monorail supports.
