STS2 could be in my future, but after this year. I want to spend a full season in ES chasing Jim Squared. Perhaps two. The funny thing is that I have a coupla CSP/STS2 bolt on goodness items (intake and Upper Strut Brace) sitting in my shed right now.

You *will* save money in STS 2. To compete with Jim^2 you will need to spend more on tires than you will spend on ST2 mods.

Scott

I disagree with this point. If the goal is to compete and get better, it will cost less. One set of Kumhos will do the trick. Hell, even running Falkens will suffice. So you save even more money.

The secret to getting better is to gid beside the MR2, talk about the course, walk the course with us. That will make you a lot better, a lot faster than any modification to the car. And guess what, it does not cost a dime.

I was very careful when I said "chasing". I learned a lot at the last Sanford event. Like. . . don't drive like a fun-o-phobe. Christ, I was driving like somene with a learner's permit. I'm sure a light will go off when it's time to "compete."

Hate that I missed The Rock. Sounds like it was a fun course/event. And what, Jim^2 had first and second by. . .what 5 seconds?

Note to self when selling/buying a house, do it in the off season.

Have been on Azenis all season so far, probably won't switch away from them if they last. With suspension changes and the new clutch at the start of this season, it's been a different car from last year already. Too many variables with me being the biggest right now.

I'm keeping my eye on STS2 for next year. See how it shapes up combined with the itch to mod the car.

I'd even consider doing it with stock springs, just run a set of Koni's, some sway bars and a little chassis bracing, quite affordable! The 15" wheels will be the biggest investment.

What about using the Spec Miata suspension kit shocks and springs?

The spec miata kit is a well designed and balanced track set up. It's also a good value, but with spring rates of 700f and 350r and very high compression valved shocks its a bit much for street/autocross :D If someone also plans on doing track events and not too much street driving it might be worth considering. :)

The August FastTrack is out. STS2 will not be considered for a national class until 2007. It is currently a supplemental class. Actually, it will compete in CSP at this year's Nationals. If there are more than 25 participants, it will be scored separately. If not, they are scored with CSP

Speaking for *myself* , not the club... If we have 8+ drivers that sign up for the class next year, I think THSCC is likely going to support it no matter what the SCCA does.

I don't think anyone said anything about not supporting it. Hell, the SCCA already has it as a supplemental class through 2007. So they are supporting it.

I love JR and think he is one the finest drivers and instructors in the country. If he can score a top 10 in CSP with an STS2 car, I will be convinced he can walk on water.

I will second that... Jonathan can drive the lights out, but it's like saying that I would get a top 15 in DSP at Nats with my STS Celica. Street tires, no diff, and concrete just don't make for a pretty mix. My guess is that he would be happy being about 5-6 seconds off the leader pace, which from the looks of it will be Tim or Rod, or so I hope ;) - AB

Add me to the list. I won't be fighting anyone away from dead last (see my times at the Rock) but my plans are to move out of ES next year. I've sworn off any mods to teh car-including tires-'til next year. Wife's orders. Hell I count myself lucky I was able to get the Miata before the kids graduated, and we don't even have kids yet.

Next year will be a different story tho. I plan to make at least one day for all the remaining events this year and start with a good grippy set of tires next. Then build up from there.

Just an update on my project CRX:

Seriously, I told you guys I would get the damn thing started. All it needed was a new $4 60A fusable link and a battery. Fired right up!

The only problem is it sounds HORRIBLE! It sounds like marbles are rolling around in the valve cover. Any guess as to what it is? I let it warm up and did a compression test. Good is 180, service limit is 140. I had 210 (lots of oil from a leaky valvecover gasket), 140, 120, 180. After that I let her cool off and yanked the motor. Honda engineering > Mitsubishi Engineering. I swear you could take 90% of that car apart with a 10mm and 12mm wrench/socket.

Anyhooo... Vincent and I will probably tear down the motor and start working on some rust this weekend. Wish me luck! I would have pics but my digital camera is dead and a I left the charger in a buddies car. Yeah I suck....

I guess we need to figure out what letter designation THSCC wants to use for STS2 (like SM2). How does STT sound? (Street Touring Two) Anyone? Anyone? Buehler? Buehler?

I think there's a thread on this somewhere, and if I recall it's ST2?

Regardless, congrats on getting it running, and yes, a good 10 and 12mm wrench will do just about everything, until you get to the suspension, when a cutoff wheel may be required (I had to cut out 3 of my LCA bolts).

With things sounding as bad as they do in the top of the motor, you may check the timing and valve clearances. My CRX pulled much better and quieted down a bit after a valve adjustment. If you need the CRX shop manual, most of it is on the internet for download somewhere. Let me know if you need it.

Ryan, what year is your CRX? I have an '88 Civic Factory Shop Manual that I'd let you borrow. I think there aren't any differences engine wise for the '88-'89 Civic Si and CRX Si. - AB

It's STT.

Yes, I know it's weird that we just don't use SCCA classes, but personally I think it's just plain dumb for SCCA to use a NUMBER in the class designation. Just picture the mess that would make in T&S. "Plus one on ess tee ess two three". ST2 is better, but there is sure to be cases where people in T&S are left wondering why they can't find the class called "ST" in the computer.

Remember everyone, T&S is often the "critical path" in our autocrosses. Once the launch interval has fallen below 30 seconds, it's often a cluster in there.

Unless there are any major objections, STS2 = STT, (and SM2 = SSM as usual). And we will continue to combat the SCCA's really dumb decisions.

Note: Ryan took the motor out w/o me present. Therefore I claim no responsibility for where those "extra" parts go when we try to put it back in. Ryan is known for many things, but organization and patience aren't two of them.

Dustin any chance you want to take a trip to Greenville in the near future to give a lecture on how to re-install an engine in a CRX? I'll make sure we have a few 2x4's on hand so you'll feel right at home. :)
