What is this post doing in the autocross section? Read on...

Check out "Live For Speed" at (what else) www.liveforspeed.com. Its the best driving game I've ever experienced. This is something cobbled together informally by some previously unknown coders in Europe and it rocks. Its not in stores. You can download the demo, and use a credit card or paypal to unlock the full version features.

Here's the best part: The full version has an autocross editor!! You can design your own courses on one very large L shaped flat parking lot. I think they could have made the editor easier to use, IMO its a little tedious to design a large course, but hey - it exists and thats a hell of an improvement over what there was before (nothing). Anyway check it out, I recommend it.

I can see it now "December and January THSCC autocross events to be held at 172.43.115.4"!

...not until I can hack my brainstem / auditory canal and be able to induce the feeling of inertia...

I suck at computer driving games because I can't "feel" what is going on.
Anyone else? Even with the steering wheel and brakes, there is still something "missing".

You have to develop some artificial process that says "too fast".

Yes, it is good for practice and develops consistency (article in SportsCar many months ago about this) but darned if I keep blowing my braking points.
I guess kids that haven't ever driven can do well in them because they don't have that innate need for that feedback.

Then again, it is pretty darned fun to romp around Laguna Seca in a fully modified 3rd gen RX-7 or turbo Miata for "free" using Gran Turismo 2 :)

Yeah it's not the same. I don't play many PC games anymore (tired of trying to keep up with the latest hardware) and have been playing mostly Xbox stuff. Been playing MotoGP2 recently. Waiting for the online version of Sega GT.

I just have to practice a good bit and use visual points on the track to determine brake zones. It sounds crazy, but with MotoGP2 you can get some feedback via the controller to let you know what is going on.

I will say that playing online and racing against other people really rocks. Especially using the voice headset and talking trash to the other players on track. 8)

I will have to check out the "live for speed" stuff.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

What are the physics like? I don’t keep up on these things, but I think that "Grand Prix Legends" is supposed to have the best "real life" physics of driving games. Any idea on how it compares?

I think they're great. There are RWD, FWD, and 4WD cars. As for the RWD cars (which is what I mainly drive), they seem to behave realistically. Lift in a corner and the expected happens, etc. Even if they're not spot on, they definitely are a challange and it takes a while to learn them.

One thing I think is a mixed blessing is the myriad of adjustments that can be made to the suspensions. I guess its great if you know what you are doing, but personally I would rather have races where everyone is competeing on a level playing field, instead of being disadvantaged because I don't have my car dialed in for the current track as well as the next guy. Luckily its easy to swap setups, so if somone is cleaning your clock you can ask him for his setup ;-) Most will hand it right over.

You won't be disapppointed. Never had Legends, although I heard the same thing.

Ahh..I see someone else has discovered this awesome game. I've been following the build-up/playing since the first "beta" version that had sound...simply incredible. Awesome physics/dynamics, and the level of adjustments are just awesome. Everything about it just blows Gran Turismo away. Still haven't figured out how to set up those darn Caterhams though...

One thing I think is particuarly cool is that the "GT" is a dead ringer for a 2nd gen RX7, which just happens to be what I'm currently driving :-)

Yes there certainly is a lot of physics code in there, I'm just not absolutely sure its dead on. The cars sure do understeer a lot sometimes, sometimes it seems regardless of throttle/brake input. Its hard to tell, like Asraf said its hard to tell what the car is really doing without feeling it.

Sure is fun and a colossal time waster though. I won't come close to admiting how many hours I've blown trying to improve my times. I prefer the FE and BL courses. Now also trying out the rallyx ones and learning a few things!
