Matt we have a site plan similar to what others are producing. I just have two areas each day I don't want to fully map before hand because I have to dodge drainage grates. I can't drop by the site easily and get a measurement. I think CCR has an event there I may ask someone to pace it off for me so I can add it to the model. Steven and I have gone over this stuff, and this includes worker stations. I think more important at this point is grid to run smoothly, I will use the extra time to map that out.
This is one of the things that bothers me the most is assuming our prep level is really low. Quite frankly I don't really want to share our(Steven and I) courses before hand at all. I'm certainly not interested in feedback of making changes because someone doesn't like an element or we can make Sundays longer . I don't think that is fun, and the only reason the pestering is so much is because in the past we have done a bad job.
Generally when I know I'm setting up I make a sketch and estimate distances before arriving on site. Coupled with notes you can setup quickly and be safe. This last event I offered to help but never got a response back from anyone. Rob L called me and asked if I was still going to help like Thursday. We showed up with nary a sketch on a napkin. I think laying out a course this way shows a low level of competency and other clubs are much more serious about this. If you cannot pace a course and estimate a speed within 10 mph, I think you need more experience before given the full reigns. This is where knowing general course guidelines from SCCA\NASA is a big benefit. If someone can't even produce a sketch and pace off the layout they need to be told no.
Roger Johnson did write a very good manual and I have looked through it in the past. Overall there is nothing more in depth to teach course design. I do think it's a cause of some real group think at this point too. We should in December make sure we have a 'party' and get some people together who may want to design next year. We can look at some key rules and concepts to train some of our club these skills that have gone lacking.

Hopefully next year when some other club can do it.

Donnie I get the feeling that you have an opinion and could be helpful. But do you come to events or help organize anymore? You certainly don't seem to have any confidence based on this quote. I keep hearing this long time members thing over and over again. I only see their handles on the Internet. When teaching course design as a skill people need hand holding and lessons of experience from these long time people.
Robert Plank and Art are my favorite long time members. They always do a great job with timing the job truly few want.
