This is some forum slackness.

Fun times yesterday. I really enjoyed the course and seeing some people I haven't seen much of in the last few years. I'm getting readjusted to front wheel drive and I drove well.

Did anyone take pictures? I saw some people walking around with cameras. I don't have any from my first two events in the car and I'd like to see some in the new ride.:)

Some great pics. Thanks Keith!

I had a great time and thanks to Karl for letting me drive his car on the street, nice ride. The focus has head room! Stephen and I had a great battle. I was a little upset when I found out that he had a 6th run due to some timer fubar. I eeked out a win of just .07 seconds. I'll take what I can this year, Stephen is always tough to beat.

Great event as usual. Thanks to all that made this event run smoothly. Fun runs were a bonus, haven't done any of those in quite some time.

Thanks for starting one, Karl! I thought you looked great driving the FocusST yesterday--glad to see my impressions confirmed. Looked really smooth through the whole course and carried good speed through a tight line on the turnaround at the top of the runway. I could never get right the slow-you-down-kinda-painful transtitions at the bottom of the course just prior to the finish. Either the entry speed was too fast, or the line was a little off  . The new tires actually protested some in that section, so I suspectI pretty much overdrove the car on each run.

I got a little bit of the graining pattern on the new RE71s that everyone speaks of; it showed right after the run where we got aggressive and overworked the front end of the car in those transitions. It went away after three more runs with a slightly tidier line and less wheel, so that's nice. Not sure if spraying the tires was helpful...we started after the sixth (third for each driver) run in the tires and then didn't go any faster, so maybe spraying wasn't needed yet? By run 4-5 pressures were stable pre/post run after we got some heat in them, so maybe they are more tolerant than initially thought. I am by far no expert, and I still don't have a good feel for the right starting pressure, though. We began at 36 and bled down to 31 by the end with no change in times between 34 and 31 psi. Will probably start the next event around 34 and work down from there as we had no rollover even at 31. I suspect the useful happy range is probably 30-35, which matches pretty closely what the GRM article impression were.

I appreciated having some feedback from National-level drivers in the car yesterday. I think it helped confirm that the car is pretty close, setup-wise. I have no idea where to go to make the car faster, though, as changing to the new tires didn't make the car pushy or loose. In fact, the car did everything I wanted it to, and when I wanted it to happen (it's been awhile since that had happened with the Rivals!). I suspect I need to drive harder to get something to reveal itself and maybe that will help guide refinements down the road.

Thanks as always to the setup team, course designers and VPs who put on the event. I really enjoyed hanging out with you. Well run event, all around!

Yesterday was a fun day for sure, the course was lots of fun, and the last section was certainly tricky especially for the bigger heavier cars. I would get so used to the fast front section and then forget I need to really slow it down for the back.

I appreciated all the ride alongs during the fun runs, it also taught me I need some better tires, lol. The Mickey Thompsons do fine, but they have the traction you would expect from a 300TW summer tire. The better tires just feel much more controllable at the traction limits than mine do.

Steven - sounds like it's about time to hit some bigger events. Car is working great. Tires working great. Driver not too shabby, either. Yep, time for bigger events! :D Thanks so much, again, for giving Holly the co-drive. She had a great time.

Glad it was a good event!

I drove about 1/3 of the way to Danville but got side tracked by a morning of fishing on Lake Michie. It got warm at about noon so we went home got some beer and headed to the pool.

Great time and nice driving Karl & Steve! Also, hats off to Lee Williams for laying the smackdown on the rest of CS by >.7 of a second on his final run of the day.

Glad she enjoyed it! Let me tell you....The more National Champs that drive my car and give me feedback on the car and my driving, the better off I am. However, she didn't uphold her end of the bargain and failed to beat me in my own car, so she has to come back and finish the job! If you or Eric get a chance I would happily extend the same deal to you...

Well, I finally did it. I managed to finish DFL at a Tarheel autox. After spinning out and killing the engine on my first run, I lost the splines in one rear hub at the turnaround on my second, causing a painfully slow coast to the finish. My apologies to everyone for clogging the course and not working, but I was able to tighten the hub nut enough to limp back to Raleigh. A special thanks to Robert Plank for loaning me his cell phone in case I didn't make it.

Mechanical failure does not qualify for DFL. Request denied.

You know he's been swapping Fiero parts into the Corvair to bring it up to date
