Great event! Running group one was fun, especially watching the battle of the M3's.

I was a little scared at first when I saw the map with the pivot cone section because the turning radius on the ST is pretty bad (maybe the wide stock wheels are to play?) but the way it was set up was pretty fun and took some 'experimenting' to do smooth & quickly. My first run I hit first on both ends of the course but decided to stay in second from the 2nd run forward through the first pivot. Sweeping out a little wider left than normal helped get the car aimed in the right direction on exit seemed to work well and was second gear friendly.

The big slalom section transitioning into the tighter double cone slalom was great too. Totally overcooked it the first time, but it was a good section to remind you to make mental notes on what not to do (again).

Working down at finish during group 3 was a hoot watching the cars' different lines and downshift/brake points. Plus, seeing the timer was bittersweet. There must have been a half dozen ways to get through there. I only saw one car DNF that section, so it flowed well. Some people really don't like pin/pivot cones but I've never really minded them but that's probably due to autocrossing at sites like Greenville, NCCAR (vda only), and all the other Danville courses that used it right at the first section on the taxiway.

Pic? Sounds like it would be a neat one to make a large picture of. :) The V8 in the M3 is only 4.0L (240 cu in for us old dudes) hence its peak torque is 295 ft lbs, but its key is that it makes that amount of torque over a hugely wide range and doesn't fall off much at all as revs rise. This creates a humongous "event" between 6500-8400 rpms hence it getting loose(r) sometimes near the top of 2nd gear like that. The old engineer within me suspects that long term there will be a price to pay for 8+k rpms like rod bearings needing attention.

All of us in F-street were pretty close in times with Keith and Art just 0.4 back, and Keith just barely edging out Art by a few hundredths and Dick just a few tenths back. It would be neat to see an overhead video view of all the cars on their fastest runs, like the UK show Fifth Gear used to do for their track tests with Tiff. I'm the only one on 275 Rivals (Keith and Art are using 245 Rivals, and I think Dick is using 245 Dunlops) -- would be interesting to see all the cars on 275s too. At some future event, Keith and I are going to swap driving the two M3s back and forth during the runs -- should be fun.

I'm on 265/35 x 18 ZII's on 18x8 inch rims . . . until today when I bolted the new set of 265's on 18x8.5 rims on the car for the Wilmington Pro/Tour and Nats/Pro Finale. My "huge to go with the huge car" 5.0 (302 cubic inches) V-8 also has gobs of torque with a relatively flat torque/hp curve so no "oh my" at high revs. Mine redlines to a "mere" 7K with a manual and around 6.7K with the automatic (automatic being the issue afaik since Ford is bragging that the 2015 auto will rev to 7K).

FYI the Boss 302 version of the 5.0 rev limits at 7.5k.

FYI for the "not FS" folks, per the new +/- 1" rule my particular version of the GT was available with 18x8 OR 19x8.5 inch wheels so I can use 18x8.5 for the better gearing with the automatic and .7 inch lower ride height. No 9's for my car (not Brembo brake version).

Here is what my runs sounded like with lens cap on camera. Overlay shows rpm, gps speed, and lateral g's.

http://youtu.be/rJJzNSPdkj0

You get to figure out where on the course the car is at any moment. Should be easy.

Matt,

Come on now, all this talk about the course and nothing on the new Focus ST? You smoked it out there good, and I recall seeing Goodyear tires on your car (assume OEM) which obviously stick very well. 4th overall PAX on OEM tires...you're headed to domination when you set it up. :) I checked out the Ford site but ended up at Car and Driver to get the more detailed specs: "Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2" in 235/40-18 size (wheel width? 8"?); 3234 lbs; 14.7@96mph in the 1/4; and for some cars nowadays an important fact that C&D notes on this test sheet that the stability control is fully defeatable. C&D's notes on acceleration testing were: "shift slow, launch ~4000rpm little clutch slip".

On the Ford site when I select the ST, I love the dropdown box to choose your transmission where the only choice is a 6speed manual.

Looks like a really nice 5-door car. I can't help but think Ford is hitting a lot of targets with this car. Pretty amazing that a "G stock" car now has 252hp and 270 lb-ft torque.

So what's the deal with this car? Details, details...

I did the wife’s DD for years, AutoX and track. She did pull the plug when she thought about it being the only 4 passenger car with less than 100K on it. Ford must have paid the SCCA off to get it classed in G stock because it’s twin, the MS 3 is in D stock. The chassis are identical except for tuning and an LSD, the Ford ecoboost is based on the MS3 2.3 l turbo with some cost reduction. It is however, a really nice car that’s well tuned for autoX. Matt does drive the hell out of it.

Thanks Dick, but I guess Ford considers wheel width a trade secret or something. :D Nowhere to be found on their site (so far).

EDIT: Found it...on Ford's UK website in their brochure. 8" wide -- decent enough to allow 255/35s, etc.

Understood. I noticed the wheel width was missing. Aargh.

Wheel width is frequently tough to find in the Ford specs. It is in the Mustang specs fortunately. Also, at least for Mustang's, it is generally easy to find the "order guide" via Google because dealer sales folk will post them. These have the viable option combos and usually has the wheel size details. In other words, got to know the secret handshake. :(
