Went back through my old posts and found that I'd mentioned maybe swapping cars. In 2012. While this would be more dramatic if I did it and posted pics of the new car... well, I thought I'd let folks drunken flame me first. :D

I'm seriously considering getting a 1lt C6 corvette. Huuuuuuge change from my RX-8.

Next question: which class should I run in since the road tires class has been split?

Feel free to begin the flaming in 3... 2... 1...

After co-driving one for a couple of years, you will want either a Z51 suspension car or a Grand Sport, the latter would be better mainly due to much wider front rims and fenders. If the budget allows, buy a 2008+ with the LS3. The extra hp and torque is worth it. I autocrossed a 2008 Z51 3LT and it was a blast. - AB

Yeah... I've looked long 'n hard at that and I appreciate the thought. It's just not in the budget for 2 reasons:

1. I want something reliable, so I'm trying to get a newer C6.
2. The Grand Sport, while better looking and more performant, isn't worth the cost to me. The base model really hits the sweet spot as far as dollers-per-smile value.
2. It looks like I can add better suspension components for fairly cheap (hopefully less that $500) if I find that the ride isn't stable enough for autocross. But coming from a stock RX-8, with the short test drive I had, it felt more or less comparable. Smoother than my wife's VW GTI () but still stable.

Aaron, didn't you say the C6 (even the Z51) really eats tires? Particularly compared to the C5/C5Z06?

Not with the 315's all around. Once we went from 295's on the front to 315's, we could get 80 runs out of a set of fronts. - AB

So, that happened last night. Pics to come.

I'm a bit confused about which class the car will be in though. I thought the class was named Super Stock, but I see it named "Super Street" on MotorsportReg. Am I missing something?

Mark,
Street means that you run on street tires. It would be classed SSR, Super Stock Race, if you have R componds. I would imagine that AutoXing on R comps would be much more rewarding than street tires. A Corvette is a hard car to AutoX because you have much more of everything than you really need. The result is that you way over accelerate and over brake. The steering is slow, my C5 Z06 has a steering wheel the same size as a pickup truck. The steering is only to intiate a turn. You can do a lot of steering with your feet. The throttle throw is about 2X of your RX8 and the torque is probably 3 to 4X. The brakes are hard to be smooth on because of their massive grip. If you have gentle and smooth input, you can do a lot with the Vette. If you jab, slam, and/or jerk your inputs, the car will teach you a lesson. That being said, training in Vette has made me faster in the Miata. If you plan to track the Vette, then you'll really get an appreciation for it. They are phenominal track vehicles. The faster you go the smaller and better the car feels. With the stock allignment, tires wear quickly. I'm running 2 degrees in front and 1.2 in the rear. Stock is somewhere around 0.7. Also, Michelins have soft rubber on the outside edges and wear there faster than some other tires. Welcome to Vette ownership, they're great cars and all of a sudden you'll notice people waving at you.
