Let's just say that I agree that if you hit any cone in an auto-x it is probably not going to be a first place run, but it could well be the difference in a trophy and not in a deep field.

The issue here is one of observation. Hitting a cone such that it is moved or knocked over is pretty easily determined. Saying that we will always have a course worker posted with the sole duty of watching the finish and start cones is just silly. Even if that worker were watching intently it would only take a blink to miss a "cone wiggle". Let's be more realistic and use the same moved/knocked down rule for the start and finish cones; anything else just gets too subjective.
The rule as "no-touch" well intentioned but harder to enforce than "no-texting while driving".

Just my $5 worth ($0.02 adjusted for inflation by date of birth)

Ok I'm putting vertical nails in the base of the finish cones.

I'll go with that James...just so long as the points are into the pavement.
Actually "nail velcro" could be the next big tire accessory.

In the end, this is the first time this rule has bitten me in 15 years of doing this so it probably really doesn't matter that much to me. However, since it did cost me the FTD this weekend, I've had more time to think about it and the rule does seem a bit excessive. Primarily, as others have stated, because it leaves so much to subjectivity, this is most likely why the normal cone rule exists as it does for all the other cones, it eliminates this subjectivity. As far as the purpose for the rule as a timing equipment destruction deterrent, I will call complete bull shit on that. Just like most other harsher punishments in the world, they really don't prove to be very effective at deterring. I really doubt changing the rule will lead to a sudden rash of timing equipment destruction and doubt that it is on the minds of most as they approach a start or finish cone. I mean, didn't you Rodney recently take out the finish timing equipment? Why ever would you have allowed yourself to spin out and do that when you knew it would lead to a DNF? People are going to do there best to avoid hitting the finishing cones regardless of the rule because hitting the finishing timing cones essentially ruins their run regardless. Once again though, I've been doing this 15 years and this is the first time it has come into play for me, so I really don't care in the end.

If Rodney would have taken out the expensive side or messed up the timing cable such that I had to burn myself soldering it again, I would have hit him in the shin with a tire iron just like I would have done with you.....I don't discriminate ;).
