So, I'm thinking of something like this:

Side 1:
Do you like cars?
Do you wanna have fun with your car in a safe friendly and environment?
Do you have $25?
Come try Autocross with the Tarheel Sports Car Club est 1964.

Side 2:

2011 THSCC Autocross schedule

Come on out we're very novice friendly!

that's money Les.

The $25 part is vital because it sort of breaks that misconception that all forms of racing are expensive to participate in.

I like it.

Quick Edit (my wife had to have her manager order business cards 3 times last month so extra eyes are always good :) ):

Do you wanna have fun with your car in a safe friendly [remove]and[/remove] environment?

There has been a few instances in the last few weeks I would have liked to have a card to hand out. Let's roll with this :).

Thanks James, "extra eyes" are exactly why I'm posting this, sometimes I think I'm a little dyslexic it should have been "safe and friendly environment". I first had the slash but I think using the actual word "and" adds to the "warmth" a bit. I will have the final cards at the meeting next week. The FedEx office next to my office can have a thousand cards printed up in a day.

any way of putting "5 dollars off with this card" on there somewhere? It will make the card even more of a selling point "oh, cool, its a discount, now I need to go". Might even allow us to recycle some of the cards we print.

If they were not intersted before, no loss on offering the discount. If they are intersted but too scared of the cost, it makes cheap sound even cheaper and they are more likely to try it.

dont know what the budget looks like or if we can suffer the $5 hit, so I will let all the brains and people with access to the books figure that out.

Another edit:

Come on out we're very novice friendly!

This is really two sentences, so perhaps separate with a semi-colon or break into two.

Come on out; we're very novice friendly!

Come on out! We're very novice friendly.

Or using a colon works too:

Come on out: we're very novice friendly!

This is a great idea Les! I'm sure many will find ways to pass out those cards. Just last week a guy stopped me getting out of my car in a parking lot and tried to hand me a BMWCCA card (had to tell him I've been a member for 30 years, lol). I was surprised he was out there working for new members. Then again the CCA does have rewards for numbers of new members gained. I suppose THSCC could do something similar if we had a place on the membership form to note what member referred you to join.

I'd mention something about all cars welcome or show a very non-autocross car on the card if we don't want too much text. I think a lot of people use the excuse that their car isn't a sports car.

This!

I always tell people that autocrossing a properly maintained car is no harder on it than daily driving other than tire wear. <<<understands the irony of this statement>>>>

I think the "Novice friendly" part is unnecessary for getting new members...it's really only the people who go to "other clubs" for events that get the feeling we're friendlier to novices (I've only done THSCC events, so I'm going only on what I've been told)...My reaction to that phrase was "Why do they need to assure me they are friendly?"

How about something simple like "Come on out and get hooked!" or something similarly encouraging?

Oh, not being a graphic designer type...but would they Tarheel logo be on there like a background watermark design? A "Follow us on Facebook!" phrase?

edit: +1 on the $5 off idea, Jason. But it should probably be for the first event only, present card and get it stamped or hole-punched for the discount.

Thanks for doing this!

Yeah, there are some logistics to consider with the $5 off because we don't want people taking advantage of us (duplicating cards etc). I think the idea is great but how to monitor and know it truely is their first time out is tough. Plus it might be nice to hand out these cards to dealerships or shops that may consider sponsorship or ads in the HT etc so the $5 looks like desperation. This could be solved by having 2 different cards...but that is just getting complicated.

Thoughts?

Well...I guess to some degree one has to make a "leap of faith" that newcomers won't be trying to bilk the system. You could just say "Turn in this card at your first event for $5 off!" and that would solve the issue. Sure, they may not have a schedule of events anymore, but that's easily accounted for by website references, FB, or even flyers at the event itself (perhaps the schedule could be copied onto the coursemap?) Can they copy it? Sure. But if it's color printed, double-sided and in a specific color of cardstock they may not go through the effort/expense of doing so.

(also, we could have an expiration date of August(?) for the discount.)

Besides, IMO if we get 10-15 people who take advantage of us while netting an average of 20-30 new entrants that wouldn't otherwise come, I'm OK with that...just chalk it up the "lost" $50-75 to marketing expense.

to stop copying, you can use a high quality card (steps away from low cost). However a higher quality card will make copying harder. It will also give an even less cheap feel. not sure if the cost is justifyable.
You can also keep track of the cards by numbering them and keeping track of which cards have been returned. Granted this is more work on the registars, but I wouldent expect a large # of these cards to actually be returned.
You could sign/initial the backs. will help some with duplicates as signed ink usually looks different then printed ink. (not as much as it used to)

All of the above being said, I dont think duplication will be completly avoidable. I think trustworthyness and our registar's seeing the same face turning in the same card 3 or 4 times in a row would be the key to stopping it.

In reference to the "desperate" statement. 2 cards is not such a bad idea. I wouuld imagine you would not want to flood the market with the discount card... but you would deffiently want to put enough out there so they can float into the hands of people who would be intersted in coming out. Also, I would think the officers or atleast the main ones... the VP's and P's. possibly the buissness manager or other roles like that would find benifit from having their own card to hand directly out to sponsors and the such.

again, all of the above has its disadvantages and anything involving a discount will ultimetly be lost potential revenue.
