I'm definitely in the "I don't have time for facebook" crowd, but at the end of the day, I don't think anybody can argue the pervasiveness of FB in the lives of the folks that we need to be getting to our events. It's not you or I (or anybody on this forum, in general) that matter in this conversation at all, so our feelings on this whole FB debacle don't really matter much. If this medium can be used to increase THSCC visbility and potentially keep our programs alive, it should be STRONGLY considered. I whole-heartedly agree that FB shouldn't be a primary communications means, but I'm positive that was never the intent.

I miss listservs. Usenet too. We've got a crapload of majordomo lists at work, including one for, you guessed it, autocross.

Hey, just a reminder, we do have a little bit of Web2.0 (well maybe 1.5) available already: the club schedule is available in ICAL format which can be easily imported by calendar apps from Google to iPods.

General club calendar: http://thscc.com/general/ICAL
Autocross events only: http://thscc.com/autocross/ICAL
Rallycross events only: http://thscc.com/rallycross/ICAL

Best yet, when events are added or dates change, your calendar will be updated automagically.

Maybe, but it wasn't actually me. I thought all those notifications were disabled, but apparently not (they are now, in theory). Some other residents of my household, let's just say it's the cat, have a little more free time than I do and like to play under multiple ID's. I don't think I even know my FB password.

Hayes 1200 baud. :) When the direct connect 1200 arrived, the world changed. :D Imagine a 4x increase ins speed! Now connecting to TUCC's IBM System/370 Model 168 with MVS/TSO remote connection interface will forever change my life! 8)

I'll join in the "few". :) No FB here and no plans to crowd-follow the FB bubble either. Not gonna happen...far too little time to keep up with something like that also.
Come on Chuck....remember when BMW started using fuel injection? At first I'm sure you thought "screw that, I'm going to go rebuild my solex carbs......for the 10th time" :).

Seriously, I see this FB page as a means of communicating anything:

-Event day reminders
-It's going to be hot, bring water/electrolytes
-It might rain this weekend, bring tarps
-Thanks everyone for putting up with that 7 cone slalom
-We're doing a 2 day autocross for the next event for the Jimmy V charity...bring your friends and their friends and support charity
-The turn out is very large tomorrow (let's get to this point), so please everyone be on time and tech-ed
-Avoid the traffic project on 15-501 in Roxboro and take 86 instead to Danville
-Yesterday was a smoothly run event, thanks everyone who came out
-Sorry grid was a mess today, we have learned from it and will make sure it is better next time

I think people are underestimating the pervasiveness of FB on a large proportion of society nowadays. People can't help but click the little red notification thing in the upper left hand corner when it pops up and see it's a message from THSCC....well let's see what they have to say.

Or the stalker type who sees that 3 of their friends RSVPed to THSCC points event 3 in blah blah. Hell, the wife is out of town, I should go to that.

I'm not denying that FB is soaring up the S-curve of adoption nor that it might be useful. If it turns out that somehow at some point I "need" FB to keep up with stuff, I'll figure out what needs to be done like Donnie posted to extract the info I need while minimizing my time/effort required.

I've been at the forefront of adopting technology my whole life James -- computer industry has been in my family since the 1950s -- like buying an IBMPC shortly after it appeared in the early 80s while I was in grad school and then shortly buying a second one for my wife (we were in grad school together). She did her thesis on computer anxiety even. :) I've always been more of a h/w guy than s/w hence wholesale adoption of stuff like SSDs on my office PCs. ;)

BTW, Solex carbs were rare and POS for the most part. It's Weber DCOEs all the way baby. Also, since first generation electronic fuel injection (i.e L-jetronic) was analog and essentially non-programmable, the ONLY way to get serious performance out of a car back then was to rip that crap off and slap on the Webers. 8)

I'm sure I'll get skewered for this but I think Twitter is better for THOSE type of things....

I agree. We need to publicize as much as possible to encourage attendance. Also the good deeds we do to keep us in good with the locals. That will aid in getting /keeping sites. Conversely, it will be one more thing we will have to monitor for appropriate content

Probably true. And the big advantage with Twitter is that all you have to provide is a link to the twitter page and nobody NEEDS an "account" to see it. They can just load and check it.

That said, Twitter sucks compared to FB at helping get the word out in a viral method in terms of *advertising*. And advertising is sort of linked to content. But what the club could do is get both a twitter and FB page and link them. Then post all the update type stuff above via twitter, and it's still there for FB consumers. Best of both worlds.
