I know I probably won't be able to fit in your seat, but I would love to be able to try it at least. I'm just interested to see if a kart is something I should even lust after anymore.

You are more than welcome to give it a shot if you fit in the seat and the kart is running well. Since it is the first event I am expecting some teething problems but maybe I will get lucky and it will work great.

It will be done.

A skinny guy like Keith will probably need to add weight to make the minimum!

Also keep in mind Rob that there are three different engine combinations that you can run. Mine allows for the lowest minimum weight. You can run an ICC engine which makes more power but has to run at a minimum weight of 420 lbs. The middle ground is a Moto engine like mine with a performance ignition that has a minimum weight of 405 lbs.

Being a 6'5" 280lb Clydesdale, I am curious where I would fit into the equation. What is the basic weight of these cars before adding driver and ballast?

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

I just did some quick Google searches and it looks like they are about 200lb +/-. So I would be a good 60lbs over minimum weight. Maybe I should just use all of my fabrication skills and make an AM car.

The pain penalty is going to hurt a lot more than the 2 seconds ever did when you hit a cone. I can just imagine big people like me, 6’4”, with limbs hanging out careening through the course. You’d have to call 911 after I made a run at the cones.

It only hurts if you center punch a cone and it hits you. Otherwise the whole kart kind of bounces over the cone and keeps going. Though I have seen a kart get high centered on a cone before it was kind of funny.

All I know is never race wheel to wheel in karts on a course lined with hay bales. Just ask Eric Peterson.

I will mirror that sentiment. I had that experience when I was younger running my rotax kart. Cones are softer and weigh a whole lot less than a hay bale. That and with a quick jet, gear and tire change I can go wheel to wheel racing if I should ever decide to.

Just make sure you are still young enough to heal rapidly.

yeah, but we are scared of guys driving trucks...no so much of those driving go-carts ;-)

I'd be scared of guys in trucks, or even those leviathon Miatas, running over guys in go-karts  I think the Evil Empire has some regulations about this that we should look into.

How long do the motors last, and what does it cost to rebuild them?

Karts are supposed to paddock near grid and push the kart over to grid not drive it as to avoid any incursions with cars.

The piston and ring generally get replaced every 4-6 hours of run time so if you only autocross it that will be every 2-3 seasons. If you run it on track it might be every 1-2 seasons. The bottom end will last a long time as long as you keep up on normal maintenance. Other than that general 2 stroke maintenance, spark plugs and such.

The best part is if you need to pull the engine apart, you can have the engine off the kart and on the work bench in 5 minutes. The engine and gearbox only weigh 30-35 lbs.

You get a vehicle that makes around 40 hp and has a 385 lb minimum weight with driver and gear and the consumables are cheap!

Wow, those 2-stroke 125cc engines have come a long way - that's twice the HP they had back when I raced 125cc motocross as a teen. Of course, that was 30 years ago, but still, 40 HP is very impressive for such a tiny engine.
