I just started a thread in the rallyX forum for volunteers for the 2011 Sandblast rally and realised that some of you who have not yet caught the rallyX bug might be interested in volunteering for next year's rally. Anders Green, the organizer says that if we get 20 THSCCers we can get our club name on the race t-shirt. Volunteering is really fun and you get to drive at least one of the stages. If you are interested register at http://www.nasarallysport.com/nrsdb/ and put THSCC in the I want to work with box.

with the drive a stage part of this, I am somewhat intersted to know what will be needed of the volunteer? I assume we should plan on the 4th 5th and 6th, but should we plan on more? also, how much do we need to come up with for expenses?

you would need to be there for the evening of the 4th and all the 5th. Volunteering on a stage comprises helping run the start and finish and all along the stage at intersections and spectator areas. Not hard work. There are several inexpensive hotels in Cheraw. You can find lots of info on volunteering at http://www.sandblastrally.com/2011/volunteers.php

You get together Friday night to listen to somebody talk about your responsibilities and to meet your co-workers. Then you meet again early Saturday morning and head out to your stage with the rest of your crew. Then you park your car at an intersection and stand/sit around for a few hours, or you park at the start or finish and stay really busy for a couple of hours. When the cars have finished the stage, you all get together again and go to the next stage you're working, or sometimes you stay in the same spot all day. You'll probably get some subs for lunch at some point.

Working start is cool because you get to talk to the people racing. It can also be somewhat stressful, due to the strict schedule, and having all the co-drivers trying to talk to you at the same time.

Working stage marshal is cool because you get to see the cars at speed. It's also really boring while you're waiting for the racing to start. And there's the possibility that you'll have to deal with some redneck who's had "his" road closed for some kind of stupid racing bullshit.

It's fun. Do it.

Just be aware that the ruts get about a foot deep in some places on the drives through the stages.

Once you are registered as a volunteer and are definitely going to attend then add your name to this list so I can coordinate with Anders to get us all on the same stage. And get us on the t-shirt. Maybe also inthe program/stage notes as well. I want to get us on either 2 stages or one that's run both directions so we will get more seat time.

The Cooper Black stages would be a good location for a group who wants to stick together. It's run twice (once each direction), then altered for a third run. And there's a lot of fun driving to do there. There are a lot of stage marshals needed, though, so a lot of people will need to volunteer.

Also, I wouldn't push the "seat time" thing too much. Rally organizers get nervous when people openly discuss that. Kinda like autoxers and playing around on setup days (well, maybe not that bad).

Anyway, count me in.

Yeah don't even think that you'll get open runs at the stages.

The experience itself is fun.
It's sort of cool to be able to drive the same roads as the competitors.
Being part of a spread out event is neat, and much more interesting to me than working corners at a road race.

However, if you're doing your worker job and not screwing around, you will truly never be able to drive for more than 1/2 mile at a time as there are a bunch of intersections to check, workers to drop off, tape to tie up, signs to check, etc...

I'll be there but am already committed to crew for Simon Wright.

If some folks don't want to hang out in the woods all day, there are always a bunch of teams needing help with crew. This is another good way to be a part of the event instead of purely a spectator. Crewing almost always leaves enough time to go to some of the spectator areas as well.

Kevin H is right to point out that you won't ever get to drive "at speed" through a stage, especially when the stage is being set up, but usually after a stage has finished the captain will run back through and pick everyone up, ideally to take them all to spectate somewhere before the next stage they'll work (depends on that team's stage schedule). Depending on who the stage captain is, you may get to run fairly briskly for the stretches between marshal locations. I usually lead fairly briskly. ;)

Even so, you get to experience a rally event, getting much closer to race cars on a hot course than spectators do. Plus your presence really makes a difference- many worker volunteers are needed to make an event happen. Plus you score at least a t-shirt, usually dinner and (usually) free beer after, and hanging out with rally teams before, during and after the event. All close by- it's like 30 minutes south of Rockingham.
