so, R&T has yet again another pony car match up between the mustang and camaro. In reading the article, it seems that both of the v8 cars are now equipped w/ the EPA required forced shift from 1 - 4 under hard acceleration. How would you deal w/ this issue from an autox standpoint? I think some of the newer corvettes already have this feature.

Just curious how you would deal w/ this? Make's my lowly 07 look better all the time.

Rodney, are you sure that's under hard acceleration? In the '08+ Vettes and also on the '04 C5 my father in law has, this is only under very low acceleration and was done for emissions.

I've never ever had a problem with it on Bryan's Vette. - AB

The article states for the mustang "...forces the driver to shift from 1-4 under modest acceleration". So does that mean under normal feather foot driving and all out balls to wall driving you shift normal, but under modest driving you're penalized and forced to upshift out of sequence?

That would be very frustrating to me. That's a nanny that needs to go away.

I've driven through the paddock and done a 1-2 shift at least 30 times in the Vette at under 15 mph. I don't think it's that big a deal. Test drive one and try it. - AB

I have it in the GTO. It bothered me for maybe a month. It's kicks in at something like speed over 15mph, coolant >150F and TPS under 16%. I rarely hit it as generally I'm accelerating harder in 1st or short shifting to 2nd/3rd to keep my gas mileage in the high teens. I maybe activate it once every other month now, usually when I should have been in 3rd anyway.

It's also eliminated with a resistor. I'll gladly deal with it to avoid paying the gas guzzler tax.

If it kicks in while you're on course you are doing something very very wrong.

I drove a new SS Camaro and a later C5 vette before and you really have to be lolly gagging along to make it force you into 4th.

James, how does the TPS position enter the equation, because when you shift (generally :) ), you are off the throttle? Or if the logic what the TPS position was at the time the clutch was depressed?

it's a solenoid that forces you to do it.

It shouldn't get in the way during autocrossing. For street driving, there are fixes to disable it.

Sam Strano is now autocrossing his own 2011 Mustang GT in FS. I assume he would not have purchased the car if skip shift is a problem for autocrossing. He did have a power loss issue of some sort at the Peru Tour for later runs on day one so switched back to a Shelby for day two. I'm trying to find out what the power loss issue cause was on the "412 HP" Mustang thread on SCCAForums.

412HP? Wow. That's SS Z06 territory! Almost makes me want to go test drive one. Alas, the last Mustang GT I saw with a window sticker listed for something outrageous like $35K. And I'm sure the dealers are gouging people on the '11.

In the C5 Vettes you can bypass the skip shift with a dongle I think

I thought Corvette ownership required a lack of dongle? Is only a small one needed?

When I talked with dealers both Capital and Crossroads claimed they could do a couple of hundred dollars over invoice on special orders (all four of my Mustangs have been special orders . . . one from DaNang, three from University Ford).

$35K for a new car is a lot . . . too bad anything else new with similar "performance" and "utility" is even more . . .

Since I currently own 3 cars purchased new in 84, 96, and 2000 I'm not too worried about early depreciation . . . My next new car may last longer than my driving priviledges . . .

When I priced 11's using my X-plan I came up with ~$30200 before destination and tax on a 300A package car with the addition of 3.73s and Brembo package.

I would guess the optimal AX car would use the 3.55s (same price as the 3.73 option ~($395)), and hard to say on the Brembo's since I beleive that gets you a 9.5" wide wheel at the expense of 19" tires. I can't remember if the non-brembo cars are using 8.5 or 9" these days.

In either case the car seems like a real bargain and I would jump on it if I could.

I agree Michael. It's possible that I would trade in my STi on one... soon. - AB

That would be a pretty fast bail!
