Funny you should mention that. I said EXACTLY the same words last night when we were discussing Greenville options. Certainly worth a look.

Another thing I was thinking about would be a night event. Four years ago Bernie co chaired G'ville with Jim P. They did a small Saturday night event for officers, chairs, helpers, etc. Then reset for Sunday. If the site owners were amenable, and the cost of the lights isn't unreasonable, that might be an option. I know most don't stay overnight, but we could have some sort of late night party for those who wanted to stay (not drink and drive home, of course.) Just a thought for something different as well as less hot.

I remember one event at Greenville (maybe the first) that was in the 40's. Try getting heat in cold tires on cold sealed asphalt.

Is there any site that is "better" in HOT weather? At least at Greenville the course is small (MUCH less walking for anything), There are real bathrooms, shade, fans, AC power, no bugs to speak of, and a course that can be viewed completely from the spectator area. Actually not much different from VMP in Dinwiddie, VA except for size and lack of sealed asphalt.

I'm confused. Greenville actually has shade and fans in the building. Why is it less desirable for the hot summer than Sanford/Danville/Laurinburg where we're just on a barren air strip?

At the other sites, there is grass to stand in. I would think about a 15+ degree temp difference. The wide open field permits more wind to get to people, serving as a fan. people bring their easyups for shade so no overhang from a building needed. (other then no grass to stand on, I think I would prefer greenville)

I can see g'vegas as being a good and a bad mid summer sight, but believe due to the shade/fan's that it is just as good as any other sight in the summer. All that being said, I was not the one working a 2 hour heat (or any heat for that matter).

You're right that G'vegas has great amenities. You didn't even mention real bathrooms, which is much better than port-a-johns when it's hot. I think that the greatest problem is when you're working your assignment you just can't get away from the 150 degree heat radiating from the black top. I changed tires under our tent, so I was actually in the shade. It wasn't enough. Overall, I still think the good out weighs the bad @ Greenville. But, if we could make it easier on everyone by changing the date, I think it's worth discussing at some point.

We don't do L'burg in July since the sandhills are so hot that time of year. There's only so much we can do. June really should not have been 100 degrees in Greenville. *shrug*

We have had heat exhaustion issues at other sites too. I remember many years ago one at Laurinburg. I remember the dude going into shock, Mike put him into the cab of my truck with the ac going.

By the time the EMT got there, we had plied him with a lot of fluids and got his body temp down to where he was functional. It took the EMT that long to get there. Something you probably did not have to worry about at Greenville :-)

So if you are going to play in 100 degree weather, expect the worse regardless of the site.

Here is what I do...I buy 4 or 5 one gallon jugs of water. I will always have one in hand starting at 6AM. You can freeze a couple of them and by mid day they will have melted enough to drink. Mix a little Gatorade in for some favor.

This is contingent upon having started to hydrate at least a day beforehand :-)

I was thinking the same thing, that with the availability of shade and fans this site should be better than the airports, however, I think the black asphalt contributes to a higher temperature, and many people were not sitting in the building but under the canopy or a pop up and were not out of the full sun.

I agree with Jim, start hydrating the day before and don't drink caffeine. (says Rob who brought his mega coffee with him Sun am)

I don't know what you are talking about James... a Bojangles biscuit fixes all "am headaches". I am just trying to be more like Chris Cline and O'Malley on their nationals road trips in hopes that one day I might drive like them! ;)

Yeah, hangovers and autocross don't mix.

I still regret going to beerfest in Greenboro on the Saturday night of the '06 NCAC. I thought I was going to die!!

Live and learn.

IMHO, there was a much stronger breeze on the highway side of the site. That didn't help

hot wind over hot roads does very little. If you have the hot wind blowing over the cool(er) ground, it will not pickup as much heat. In either case, I thing it will just be hot and the solution is proper hydration... how do you think that people move around in the deserts on camel back...
