Got a monster screw in my brand new tire (seemed to be a electrical cable holding clip with a screw through it) on MLK in CH. I pulled into city hall and luckily had my plug kit and air compressor with me so I went to town....pulled the nail...pshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Anyway, I plugged it, pumped it up and drove off. Pumped it to 50 psi when I got home and it's holding steady (cooled down psi).

Would you guys advise against autoxing on this tire? A quick google shows that plenty of people do and a decent number of people advise against it (with no experience to back their cautiousness).

EDIT: Best part, as I had the ass end of the car in the air with no wheel on it and reaming the hole on the tire on the sidewalk...sweating like a dog, a bitchy woman came out and told me that I can't park there!.....my response: "Does it look like I'm parking".....what an idiot.

autox'g is not much of a problem considering the speeds. Now, if you were tracking, I think the general rule is not to run a plugged tire for safety reasons.

BTW, I assume you put the tire back on and moved the car since you were illegally parked... 8)

I should have handed the keys to her and told her to park it legally for me on 3 wheels.

I ran most of a season on a plugged V710 without any issues. Actually I ran those tires all the way down to the cords - (corded the cords)

doesn't your road hazard apply to this, or is there sufficient wear on the tire that a new single tire might throw balance off? {guessing on that last part}

There is effectively 0 wear on the tires...but the tire itself doesn't exist anymore :). And what do you mean by road hazard?

I'd recommend taking it to a place to get a proper plug put in (from the inside), but thats me.

Realistically, the only concern would be the heat and higher pressures causing it to pop out. You're probably fine.

Get a real patch. I don't want to be working the course when your plug fails. (I did have one leak on a street tire years ago). When you plug the tire, you dig a bigger hole though the the steel belts (which isn't so good for the tire's integrity), and the jagged edges are bound to chew on the plug.

I guess the 36k miles i put on my Civic with a plugged sidewall (!!!) via me doesn't mean much in this conversation :). I'm calling Mark tomorrow to see if he'll mushroom it.

There is effectively 0 wear on the tires...but the tire itself doesn't exist anymore :). And what do you mean by road hazard?

Road hazard is the little warranty folks pay to get a replacement tire should it get damaged by road debris.

Got it, I thought you meant the Subaru 3/36k thing. I looked through it and didn't see anything about tire damage.

Art and Mike are right. I never run a plugged tire. Get a proper inside patch and forget it.

A good rule of thumb is if your in doubt, Don't. That way there won't be any safety issues in your mind. Get it patched properly

Take that advice. This is a good rule for just about everything. Almost every time I've asked myself, "Are you sure you should do this," I wished I had not done it.

I think in his younger years Bernie didn't follow that advice and there might be a couple (or more) kids walking around that look like him! :lol:
