How do people keep getting bitten by fire ants at Laurinburg? I don't remember ever having a problem with it. I just don't stand on the grass. Seems easy enough.

I always bring a can of ant spray to laurinburg. I spray around the wastebasket I bring for a trash can and I spray around the canopy I set up, and I haven't had a problem.

I agree, I've been known to bring a can of RAID and spray down any apparent mounds near me. The trailer helps too - keeps you and your stuff off the ground. My trailer deck is always open for folks to hang out on if there's room.

Don't leave any kind of food scraps in your pit of any kind. A few years back there was a group that left all kinds of trash in their pit area when they left and the ants were everywhere. I think they left an empty box from some glazed donuts....the ants were having a field day. This includes not throwing food items away in the Porta-Johns. They will find their way in there. Who ever gets stuck cleaning that up will be really pissed off at you too. Yes, I still don't care much for the people that left that in Laurinburg a few years back...fortunately I don't see them at too many of our events.

I've never been bit, but I've seen plenty of ant hills at the worker stations, so you just really have to pay attention to where you're standing out there. I've seen a few near the P section.

Also, in the pit they're hit or miss. The key is to not leave anything with sugar (like an empty can of soda) because you'll come back and everything will be covered. I try to keep food & bevs in a cooler where they can't set up camp.

Aren't the ants at a THSCC event a right of passage?

I always get multiple bites there just changing tires in the pit, of course I'm the type of person who can get 5 mosquito bites around other people who are getting none. I must exude insect pheromones. I've even managed to bring back some fire ants on my tire trailer and get a couple extra bites at home unloading my trailer.
