Back to the question of Mini Coopers: John and Bobbie Byers now own the Purple Turtle and will be autocrossing it. Smart Cars of Cary now owns my 2002 yellow S2000. If anyone wants an S2000 in excellent condition with Koni yellow shocks, that is were to go.

I now own a yellow 2007 Mini Cooper S. Lots of nice daily driving features, great steering feel, wicked torque (and torque steer), 27MPG in short commute in-town driving.

I have already picked up a 2nd set of OEM wheels. One set is 16s, the other is 17s.

The question is whether to mount autocross tires on the 16 or 17s. Any thoughts on that?

Of course Hoosier A6 are the hot tire, but they are rediculously expensive.

How does the Mini S do on Kumhos? Any thoughts on that?

Thanks, Pitch

I ran plenty of Kumhos on my R53 with no unexpected issues. I was running 16"s. Your car has different gearing I think, and even with the LSD (you got one with the LSD, right?) I'd probably run 17"s on that car.

That's funny. No. Hysterical.

Out of all the DS cars I've driven (ITR, '06-'09 WRX, 135i, 330i ZHP, Speed3), I had the most fun in the Mazdaspeed3. That thing made me feel like a hooligan (OK, more like a hooligan than I already am) and actually had me giggling in a few spots out on course. It was enough of a hoot that I'm seriously thinking of buying one as a daily driver. I don't know exactly what it is about that car but it was just plain fun. It was nearly the polar opposite to the now not-so-dearly departed yellow ES MR2 in which I never had a single run where I got excited.

Too bad you don't know anyone who'd offer you a seat in that new addition to DS.

OK, I admit there is a certain bit of irony in that statement.

Yes David, my Mini has the LSD. Between the LSD and all the electronic traction control stuff, it did great on the slippery roads last week. It also does not have the monster sun roof. It is really what I configured in a new one for daily driving and autocross.

Must... resist...

Kendt, pure stock it ran 14.196 in the quarter at Rockingham. Also, it took 1st place in Conservative S2000 class at the NOPI Nationals Car Show in 2003 and 2004.

Are you still resisting?

Not well  - Smart Cars Cary? As in the Itty-Bitty-Car? Checked their site, but not listed in the used inventory yet.

Kendt, it was there last week! They must have sold it, even with the cold and snowy weather. I thought that it was still there. Sorry!

so, I went to this sorry excuse of an "international car expo" at the fair grounds this weekend. I think this is the last time I'll go to this. Nothing more than the NC car dealers putting all cars in one place to sell. No glitz, no glamor, nothing to capture the eye. As far as I can tell, there was no Saab, BMW, VW, Mercedes or Porsche. Looks like all the euro marks stayed clear. No displays, concepts, models on rotating platforms.... nothing. Can't even get a beer, but I digress....

I sat in the camaro again and I don't fit, especially one w/ a sun roof. I can just fit into a non sunroof model, but no way I can wear a helmet. As a matter of fact, most GM cars I sat in my head hit the roof. Looks like GM is out for me. I did sit in some of the mazdas and I fit in all of those save for the rx8. The 3 offered plenty of head room. I also sat in the MX5, I have no idea how Mike Miller fits in that car. I felt shoehorned in. I think the MX5 is out for me as well.

I also looked at the new mustang again. Just can't get past those rear lights. Interior is OK, but not as retro as the '05-'09.

I did look at the new subu WRX. I did fit and that's an option down the road. Not sure if I like the new profile of the car, the jury is still out for me from a design standpoint.

Based on everything I saw, I'm thinking the current '07 mustang may stay in my stable for a while longer.
