I’ve been considering getting the bmw painted since all of the clear is coming off of it and I’m starting to get some rust on the roof where the bare metal is exposed. The car has 180k on it and is only worth about 4k total, so a high end paint job is not what I need. I’ve called a few places and went by Maaco on Atlantic Ave today. They’re running a sale right now and I can get a base/clear paint job w/ a 5 year warranty for about $1200. I can also put a little sweat equity into this by removing the door handles, bumpers, lights, etc to get a better paint job.

Anyone have any comments on Maaco? Guy up front was friendly and knowledgeable for what they offered. The car is still in nice shape over all and Jordan will probably keep it for a few years. Comments?

I have no experience with them myself, but do have some interest level. I had some corrective paint work done by Lloyd down at Colors on Parade about 4 years ago on my Celica. The clear coat is chipping off on the driver door and I've thought about getting the whole thing repainted. Considering the car is worth about $5-$6k, I didn't want to spend a fortune, for this will be a daily beater for work.

From what I know, the prep is #1 most important piece to a good paint job, so the more you can do yourself Rodney, the better it will turn out. - AB

Do that. They will tape over everything instead of removing it. If you can remove all the stuff that is easily removable you will end up with a much better job.

Just had Peach (on US1 near Maaco) paint my 1985 Mustang GT ... eleven years after they last did it ... So its not perfect, but they did some minor body sanding, base and clear coats in the two original colors for $500.

I think Mitch Moore had his track car painted there too.

Might want to give them a look ... pricing is a little like used car shopping so be prepared.

I've had my car painted at Peach twice. The first time after tapping the tires at VIR. The second time was a non-track incident. For about $350 I got a one coat paint job (clear coat was mixed with the paint. They did a great job for the price. No runs and very little orange peel both times. They now use Dupont paint and it is holding up nicely. I know someone who got a similar paint job from Maaco and they were not happy with the runs in the paint. I guess there is no guarantee that you get the same painter at Peach as I got.

this one of those "you get what you pay for scenarios". Jordan is planning on keeping the car for a while so I'm willing to pay for a mid level paint job. There's nothing worse than having to deal w/ a crappy paint job because you have to look at it everyday. I'm going to go by peach today to see what my options are. Hope to have this knocked out in a few weeks. Guess I need to start stripping the car...

hey rodney, i went through the same thought process and checked around...you have two choices, pay a bundle and get a gauranteed good job or take your chances with maaco/peach. and by a bundle, i mean thousands, not hundreds.

i came to the conclusion that i would go with maaco/peach but increase my chances by going with one of the more expensive packages. for a car that's not worth but $3-5k, why spend $2k on the paint?

I agree that you either go with Peach/Maaco quality or take a big jump in price.

Peach will do a good job - Its not perfect but certainly acceptable. They'll probably have a few cars there that they've just painted so you can get an idea of the work. As far as longevity, the paint job they did on my Mustang lasted 10 years.
When I had them repaint it last month I was surprised at the amount of masking done. The only overspray I've noted is a small amount on the tires and a bit on the side windows.

They're not terribly organized and the shop is a nightmare. I encouraged them to take their time in getting it done. Be explicit on what you want done. They will also do minor body work.

The two stage base and separate clear enamel paint job lists for $499.
It was on sale for less than $200 last month. Extras I bought were $150 to repaint the trim/bumpers in the second color as was "factory" in 1985. They also added some extra sanding, etc. Full list for my job was just over $900. I paid $500.

just went by Peach, dear Lord, what a bunch of goofs. Not very organized and their shop looked like crap. I saw a car they were pulling out and it looked like it had been painted w/ a rattle can. Lots of over spray on the bottom.

I guess you can't tell a book by its cover, but this place just didn't have it together. Right now their price is higher and less warranty, so I'm leaning towards Maaco right now.

Wished I knew how to paint, I'd do it myself....

Give it a shot. If you mess it up, sand it all off and take it to maaco.

The key to this (like most paint) is all the damn sanding. Paint, sand, paint, sand, paint, sand...wash, rinse, repeat. I have a good amount of patience for detail-type work, but I hate sanding.

Well, the bimmer is at Maaco on Atlantic Ave. Best price I could find for a base/clear paint. They have a sale going on right now. Warranty for 5 years to boot. Stripped the car to the minimum that I could. Side skirts, rub strips, grill, lights, mirrors, roundels and a few other things. We’ll see what happens. Should be ready next week. I'm just hoping for a decent paint job.
