You wouldn't wanted to have pics of what I saw today. Had some serious runs in the paint. Also had some overspray on the trim/molding. We had some "cordial" words and they said they would fix any problems. We marked all the trouble spots and we'll try again tomorrow.

In general it looks decent and it's what I expected from a finish standpoint. I'll know more tomorrow. Stay tuned....

Bring some good, bright lighting with you when you go to pick it up the second time. I'm assuming you can relocate from memory the location of the runs they're promising to correct. Make sure there aren't any sanding marks. It'll look like someone ran sandpaper across the paint, because that's what they probably did.

Also, run your hand across the paint. See if the area they had to re-shoot with clear transitions smoothly from the fix area to the surrounding areas.

Overspray is mostly easy to fix after the fact - of course, the less of it, the better, but it's not impossible to remove it.

I'm not sure how much perfection you can expect out of a $200 paint job, but there's some stuff to look for.

I went for the higher end paint job, base/clear, color match, 5 yr warranty at a little over a grand for the paint job. I expected better....

Rodney,

Once you get it back remember the paint is still soft and curing. No wax based products for typically 60 days or so. This is different from a new car where they can bake the body at high temps because the soft bits aren't attached yet.

Rodney,

http://www.thscc.com/phpBB/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=

I did the DIY paint job on my Celica. I posted on it a couple of years ago. Here is the old pots. I'll have to dig up the pictures and repost them. It is a lot of work. I did all the sanding by hand. An air powered small disc sander is really needed. You need to do lots of thin layers or it will orange peel in a flash. The little 4" sponge rollers really do work. You must use a plain colour. No metallics.

I did it over a couple of weeks. You need wet sand then wipe down with mineral spirits between layers. I did it for fun. My car was painted an ugly plum purple and the paint was crap. There really wasn't a way for me to make it worse. I picked black. That shows every mistake. But I wanted to do black. It is a lot of manual labor.

Quicker would be just an LPHV gun and shoot it yourself with a cheap enamel. Just do more light coats, not thick coats. You can get an LPHV for like $50.

It made a fun project. Prep work is #1. Sanding each layer and smoothing it out is #2. That boring manual labor stuff is what gives you the better finish. The Rustoleum stuff dulls fast. I let it dry a couple of weeks. Then wet sanded it with like 2000 grit. Then got a my PC polisher and some 3M FinessIt and went to town. Then put some polish sealer on it.

The paint itself is decent, although theres a lot of crap in the paint on the hood. I think I can fix that ok w/ some 2000 and buffing. What really looks bad is all the damn overspray. That white on black really stands out. I also got overspray in the engine bay, so tons of work to do to this car.

I bought a can of their trim paint, but can't put painters tape on the car right due the paint being soft. I'll just have to live w/ this a few months and detail it in the spring.

Bottom line, I can't recommend this guys. No pride in their work, and yeah, I know it's a get it in/out shop. I did get what I paid for. The upside is I got a free paint job on the muffler! (bone heads....)

That depends on where the "crap" is. If it's sitting in the clear coat, then you may be able to sand it out. If it's in the base coat, under the clear, you're stuck with it.

As to the trim, yes, you can redye or repaint it. It's a heck of a lot easier to do that off the vehicle. I've got a how-to on my fledgling blog.
