I’m thinking about plunking my money down on a go-pro hero wide angle camera. Anyone had any luck w/ these? For the price it looks like a good deal. Tons of attachment points and the camera flip option. Looks like it will be upgradable via software to accept a 4gig card in the near future. Let me know if you’ve had any luck w/ this please.

Rodney,

I have never personally used one, but I know people a few people with sport bikes that use these and mount them all over their bikes. The down side is I hear they pick up alot of noise, and there is no view finder to look into.

That being said, everyone I have heard that uses them says its the best bang for the buck.

but this is all other peoples comments summed up.

I have a GoPro Wide. Used it twice so far. Mounted to Roll Hoop. First event I didn't have the sound set correctly so the camera picked up pushrod noise and the run audio made my engine sound almost F1.

The firmware upgrade for the "wide" is available to allow more storage per card. However, battery life is about 2 hours with the best rechargeables and 3 with the best non rechargable lithiums. If you get a GoPro you will need to format the memory card regularly to actually get the recording time. However my Canon point and shoot says the same thing for movies so I assume it is similar to the need to defrag hard drives.

There are lots of more expensive options out there. ApexSpeed has numerous threads. Reviews for all the options are mixed. Lots of love/hate.

For example:

Also search GoPro.

Here are a couple of mine plus a couple of Bernard Cooley's

Second event got the sound correct but had one mount bolt a little loose so the camera tilted a bit.

Note that the course are slightly different even though they look very similar. The car had VERY stiff springs.

Also, see a couple of Bernard Cooley's runs. One at VMP and one at the Nationals. He uses a Flip Video camera.

A couple of Chase Cam videos in a Vette. The insert is from the rear facing camera.

Rodney,

If you want, you could borrow the ProPlay GPS that I won at the Party last year. It is pretty good. Wide angle, and a ~2.5" LCD to set up the shot. It is more expensive than the GoPro though.

The video quality is good. Not 52" LCD good, but it is good enough for sharing on the interwebs.

The only down side I can see to the ProPlay is that the mic is on the front of the unit. So it gets a TON of wind noise when mounted on the outside of the car.

I have been having problems with my compter getting the camera to talk nicely to the computer but it works fine on other computers. That is the only reason I haven't posted videos for people to check out.

Let me know if you want to give it a shot.

Are you wanted to sell this? Do you have a model number for it? I'd like to see what your camera has to offer. If you want to sell, what price are you asking? PM me if you like.

Not really thinking of selling it. I just need to get the camera and the computer to play nicely together.

As for model number, I'll have to check when I get home.

Rodney,
We have one that Bernie bought earlier this year from a vender @ VIR. It’s OK. We’ve had fun with it, and it’s cool to be able to stick it almost anywhere. The drawbacks are that if you put it outside your car you’ll need the starter or grid worker to start it. It has no fast forward so if you start it before you get strapped in, you’re wasting battery etc. It’s also a little tricky to start sometimes since it’s so small the same buttons do several functions depending on how many times you push them. I’ve had people turn it one and off at the same time. Also, the playback is OK for small screen or computer, but playback on a big screen TV is very jerky. Quality doesn’t compare to a better camera.

All that being said, I’ve been waiting for the upgrade to see if the newer ones are better. On track the results are somewhat better than AX, and by all means, get only the wide angle model.
