hey all...i have this new black e30 convertible that i want to get painted. any suggestions on vendors. i already called Lloyd at Colors on Parade...he doesn't really do full car painting b/c it's too expensive for him. plus, i think he's be out of my price range anyway.

i don't want go with a place like maaco, but i also don't want to spend thousands. i want to stay around $1000-$1500. so for that price, i pretty much have to stick with black (i'd love to change the color, but i don't think i could do it very well in my budget).

anyone know a good vendor in the area?

has anyone done the "best" maaco job and what did they think?

Mitch Moore did use Peach. They also painted my old Mustang many years ago. If you upgrade a bit from the basic service and do some prep work yourself you can get a pretty decent paint job. At least relative to what you need for a track car.
You might also want to get an estimate and wait a few weeks. After they quoted the mustang, I went out of town for a few weeks. When I got back they had called and offered a 20% discount off the quoted price.

We had MAACO paint the old THSCC bus a few years back and actually they did a pretty decent job. The paint was glossy and even. The 'details' is what they are missing, and like Frank said if you do some of the prep work yourself that will help. For instance they won't remove lights or anything, they just tape over them. If you remove all the lenses and stuff like that beforehand it will definitely look better.

Karl and I talked to the guy that mixes paint for shops in the area at Motor Parts Warehouse in downtown Raleigh several months ago. He mentioned that he knows that some of the Peach's guys are better than others, and some are willing to take on "side work" for cash. I'd bet that other shops are the same way. I wish that I could remember the guy's name, but if you head down there Saturday morning, they're not that busy and are willing to talk shop with you about potential leads and steps to prep the car for paint. It might save you some jingle that way and let you avoid John Q. Dropout's on-the-job-training results.

Next time I go to Majestic Solutions, I'll ask those guys if they've got any leads on a good budget paint shop. They should know.

I haven't used them personally, but Auto Interiors and Tops (downtown Raleigh) has had an excellent reputation for many years. I've seen some of their work first hand, and it's very good.

What are you looking to have done?

Hold the phone! I've still got 1/2 a gallon of Rustoleum and an new roller.

If that is good enought for our Lemons car, it should be good enough for you.

Tunstill Williams on the south side of Raleigh near Ray Price Harley does a good paint job for a fair price. He painted my former boss' Lincoln and it still looked good years later.
