I don't want to spend much time hanging upside down under the dash, so I hoped someone would recommend a shop in the area that could wire an iPod adapter in for me. I called Pro Electronics, but they indicated it would be a complicated job, so I am not sure what to think of that.

Thanks!

I think BMWs come with iPod adapters. You could just trade the S2K for an M3 and not have to go through the hassle.

Or Satellite radio.

Are you trying to use the factory receiver? The easy button would be to buy an iPod ready receiver and simply run a cable either behind the dash to the glove compartment or along the tunnel to the box between the seats and keep it there for easy removal.

Well, I was figuring it would be cheaper to run a couple cables and not to replace the receiver. I have no idea what I will end up doing actually. If the factory unit can't be used, I might just forget about it and get an FMm transmitter, though I had one before and was not too crazy about it.

A-

If there is an unused connector to a missing accessory like a cd changer or Sat radio, there are plug in solutions. but it will still require masochistic contortions and a great deal of foul language.

Complicated? Doesn't sound like it. Not too much hanging under the dash time. Sounds like the biggest trick is pulling the factory radio out of the dash. Also from 30 seconds of browsing it sounds like Best Buy stocks, sells, and installs something that works. You should try it yourself -- that which does not kill you will make you stronger.

Heh. I went and googled, and maybe I'll take a shot at it after all. Can't be that bad. Getting the radio out the dash might need some fiddling, plus getting the adapter to some place convenient, like the console storage.

Be careful there. I spent two hours this weekend rewiring the speakers in my wife's pathfinder b/c some mouthbreather botched the original install. In my experience it pays to do these things yourself as your average stereo shop employs the guys you went to highschool with who failed woodshop three times. In the case of my wife's pathfinder who ever did the install before we purchased it cut half of the stock bose system out, and spliced in new wires by removing the shielding and just wrapping bare wire around it. Finally they wrapped it in electrical tape. Well the gum from the tape was interfering and it made a bad connection. After I cut the bad stuff out and soldered the connections back together and used heatshrink it sounds great again.

I've noticed that crutchfield has become much more competitive on their prices recently. They also give you instructions for your car on how to do it and include the wiring harness and cage needed to do it if you buy a radio over 129$ or so. I put a Alpine in my wife's car a few weeks ago CDA 9884 that retails around 150 and it has a awesome ipod interface and comes with all cables needed for the ipod.

Oh yes! I will go without any music before I let Best Buy or their like touch my car.

I used the Pro Electronics guys in the past for the Miata, they installed a Viper alarm and I had zero problems with them. They were recommended by Sports and Compacts.

+3 on props for Crutchfield install kits, that being the number of times I've used them...

Alex, let us know how this works out. I've been searching for such a thing for mine, and the answer keeps coming back "that'll only work on a 2006+ car."

If it makes any difference, I'm after something that I can use with my iPhone. At the moment, I'm just using earbuds, and while that works, I don't think it's legal to drive around with earbuds in.

I recently bought an fm modulator not a transmitter for my Volvo. It wires behind the radio. There are three connections to make. You plug the antenna wire from your stock headunit into the modulator, and the modulator's antenna lead into the back of your radio. Tap into power and a ground and you are good. Cost about $30 from crutchfield. Sound quality is better than any transmitter I have ever used.

Thanks for the pointer Jeb. I might have to use one of these if getting an iPod adapter wired in will be as complicated to impossible as it seems.
