I'm scratching my head on this one, ready to humbled again by the wisdom here ......

Ordered a set of tires for the daily driver from Tirerack drop shipped to HH. Mark mentioned that one of the tires would not pass the Road Force measurement. I emailed Tirerack about the problem with my Invoice number and they responded that they would get another tire shipped out but that they need the VIN from my car. Any idea why?

FWIW - tires are Dunlop Sport A2 plus, car is a '96 Maxima SE

Thanks,

Frank

To make sure they send the right speed rating for your car?

Scott - Could be, but certainly they know what they just shipped me via the Invoice number. Didn't need a VIN to place the original order with them either.

I'm just wondering if somehow this is linked into the efforts to get folks to register their tires for recall purposes.

After I get the new tire I'll ask .....

Might be to keep track of how many replacement tires they send a certain car? I really don't know. Just grasping at straws.

I've had to give them a VIN before. The reason in my case was that the tires in question were in VERY short supply and the manufacturer only wanted the tires sold to people who needed replacements for OEM tires. I believe the "demand" for the tires in question was from people upgrading their SUV wheels to bigger rims and at the time there were *very* few sizes available (the vehicle was a later model Range Rover that came with 18" wheels and at the time that was pretty huge for an SUV). So they asked for a VIN to verify that it was for a vehicle that had that tire OEM instead of something else.

Doesn't sound like that could be possible in this case, though. *shrug*

Oh, and in my case Tire Rack first asked for the VIN and a few hours later informed me they were already out of those tires anyway. I got lucky that a local dealer had one in stock (this was for one that had a sidewall puncture after being fairly new as it was). Even then I had to go through a lot of crap to get it. While waiting for "clearance' the manager did mention that he had stocked up on those tires as he had a contact who told him that might happen. Seems shortly after a lot of people ended up waiting several months to get tires. I never thought I'd be "lucky" to get raped that badly for one damned tire. Yet another reason I don't buy Land Rover products any more.

The only way to know for sure is to ask TireRack- all the rest is speculation at best. Even asking TireRack- you may or may not get a straight answer. If you ask Mark at HH nicely, I'm sure he can get the real scoop from someone at TR- he seems to have a good relationship with them

Reminds me of the time I bought tires for my truck from TR about 2 years ago. I ordered them online, stock size, stock load range. Got the order confirmation, etc, then a couple of days later, got an email telling me to call a CS rep at x103 or something. I called and the guy told me they could not sell me those tires, because they were load range "D" and my truck ('96 F350 dually) required load range "E" or higher tires. I told him that the truck had "D"s on it and they would be fine. He REFUSED TO SELL ME THE TIRES. I was pissed, so I went and looked at the spec sticker on the door jamb, right there, clear as day it said "Tires- LT215/85R16 D".... I called TR back and told him what I found, he still balked until I told him I could email him a pic of the sticker if he did not believe me. He then reluctantly said "we'll ship these right out to you"....

Similar story when I ordered some 195/60R14's on special to replace the 195/65R14's on my BMW- they cancelled the order and told me it was the wrong size!!! Funny thing is, 195/60R14's came on the first 2 years' production of that car- they switched to 195/65's for the last 5 years....

I guess TR is just trying to protect idiots from themselves, but it's getting ridiculous.

Bret.
