Can anyone recommend a good Saab mechanic? A friend recently bought a '99 9-5, which has turned out to be a money pit. TIA

Tom Townsend of Townsend Imports in Greensboro is is well respected at saabnet.com. It may well be worth the drive.

Yup, he has a whole 'how to' guide on the website, although the site is up and down a lot. The dudes on www.saabcentral.com always refer to that and the Bentley's manual as the 'bibles' of the Saab world.

In my limited experience with working on Saabs (for about a month and half now), I have found them to be one of the more ass backwards setups ever.

When was last time you changed a clutch on a FWD car and didn't have to pull the tranny? I rest my case. - AB

I would give Automotive Solutions in Chapel Hill a call (933-3884). The business is run by a friend of mine named Tioga and he is one of the best mechanics I have ever met. The guy is also one of the most honest people you will ever meet and his prices are very reasonable. That is a hard combo to find!

He is a Saab expert (having owned several) but will work on any European car (BMW, Audi, VW, Merc, Volvo, etc). He also occasionally works on Japanese stuff (mostly Toyota). He was the head mechanic at Crossroads European in the park for a number of years before he started his own business. I guarantee he will do you right if you give him a call.

He is also the only person that I will let work on any one of my cars besides myself FWIW.
