I'm going to be in South Raleigh for a class next week, and I've got a block and some rods I need to get machined. Does anyone have any recommendations?

(I know T. Hoff is a club sponsor, but they did a late and rather poor job on the block I have in my Reliant. They knocked quite a bit of the price, but I'd rather have it done right the first time.)

The machine shop at what I believe is now Walker Auto Stores at 705 E Six Forks in Raleigh used to be (in the 1980's) the best or one of the best ones in Raleigh. I have no clue if they even do this work anymore (no yellow pages ad). The number is 833-7381.

Edit to add: Per their website http://www.walkerautostores.com/ The Six Forks store does still have a machine shop. The website has this number for the machine shop: 833-8955

I've been quite happy with the work of "Cylinder Head Specialties" (Specialists?) in Wake Forest.

They've done 2 heads for me now. Very reasonable pricing, competent people. They do block work to then, I suppose?

Yup, full service maching shop. Pretty sure the guy that runs the place is one of the fellows that helped T-Hoff get a good reputation.

I've had head work done there, and had a block sleeved. Nice work all the way around.

A friend of mine and I recently worked on our old Laser with a busted timimg belt. The number two piston also bent two exhaust valves. We pulled the head and had Walker (on Six Forks ) press out the those two valve guides and replace them. We also had them replace the two bent valves.

Very reasonable pricing, even for the parts they replaced (valves were about the same price as RockAuto lists them for). We took them the head on a Tuesday, they said "should be ready by the end of the week" . The head was ready late Thursday. Car is now running fine.
