I also don't know much about the process, but I wonder if maybe it can hide cracks. Basically they start and you don't see them until it is to late.?

Could not the same be said of paint? Or does powdercoating go 'deeper' so a crack is less visible?

I didn't know if it ended up being thicker. The improper heating/loss of strength sounds right to me.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

The tech that I've seen indicates that powdercoating wheels isn't the best idea ever. Especially when the car is tracked. Exhibits a, b and c of C5 wheels follow, please look at the non fuxored wheel too.

Looks like I am not the only one who has cracked a powdercoated C5 wheel....

I think I will be painting them from now on.

Wow, who would have thought that being lazy and never painting my autocross/track wheels would turn out ot be a prudent safety precaution? (Not to mention never getting paint between my nuts. I think that's what someone warned us about earlier in this thread.)

Hubcap Heaven can arrange to have your wheels refinished. I have no idea about the safety implications of refinishing.

set of large C5 Corvette RIms. He was asking more but came down
some becuase it was two complete sets of rims being done. I sold one of the sets to Graham Jagger. Most of the cost was for stripping & cleaning.

Graham, see pictures above. Maybe you ought to sell your car fast

The wheels I got from Mark are holding up fine and not showing cracks. Those wheels haven't seen the track or autox (except an Evo School). They're just street wheels. Personally I don't care for the powder coat on them. It just doesn't shine like painted/clearcoated wheels. And us waxers like shiny wheels

Once the tires I have on them are gone so are the wheels. They were just an experiment since I got a nice price from Mark on them. I'm going back to my old sawblades after I strip and polish them.

Wes,

How about some details behind those wheels? Just looking at the Exhibit A/B picture. My first incination would be someone had a serious off track excursion. Based on all 5 spokes splitting and the large out of round section of the wheel.

I checked the link back to that site you linked and I can't get on there to read the story behind it.

Graham

The same happened to one of Mike's wheels on his BMW at VIR. I don't think it was caused by powdercoat or an off-track excursion.

Mike you still got that pic?

Neither. They had been painted with a rattle can though. The off-track excursion happened *after* it broke.

This was a simple matter of thermal and stress cycling. Cyclical fatigue. Wheels ARE a maintenance replacement item.

Sheesh. I started this post because I wanted to do a set of Kosei K-1s in Hot Pink to match my numbers. You guys have got me scared to wax the things, let along paint or powder coat them. Is it safe to wash them with mild soap and water?
