After about 35k miles, my fabulous Windstar Phaser tires are about gone. I like the look of the directional tires. Any recommendations out there for street tires?

thanks!

I have about 5k miles on a set of P-Zero Nero M&S, and I love 'em. They are rock solid in the rain, pretty quiet (compared to low tread Sumitomo HTR+ at least), and amazing in the dry. If you want to see them on a car, let me know.

Does anyone else want to chime in on this? I'm getting close to purchasing some new street tires and I've started my research on the web. Any serious likes or dislikes out there? :whoknows:

I'm running a set of Kuhmo Escta ASX's on my daily driver(205/55/16), and for the first 2K miles, they've seen plenty of rain and snow here in MD, as well as a couple of trips back and forth to NC. They've done admirably in the snow on a RWD car, and seem to work very well everywhere else. They're quiet, have a sidewall stiffness that's a good compromise between ride and handling, and respectable grip for an all season tire. Since they're Kuhmos, they're inexpensive, of course.

I believe Jason Mauldin is using them as daily driver tires on his 240SX also.

Yeah, I like them so far. Extremely quiet and they did great in that little ice storm we had a few weeks ago.

I use Continental Extreme Contacts for my winter daily drivers and Azenis sport (rt215) as my daily summer drivers. The Conti's are pretty good in the snow and very good in the rain. Dry handling is acceptable even for spirited driving. A co-worker uses the Conti's for his all year tire on his GS400 and likes them a lot as well.

I'm running Toyo RA-1's as street tires on the Miata (not driven in winter up here at all). Not much of a good choice out there for tires in 14s, and the Toyos are big fun. :)

I found that full tread Kumho 712s are incredibly bad in snow and ice. OK in dry or rain.

Kumho 716 M+S are really cheap, and have lousy dry braking traction. Cornering isn't too bad, by comparison, if you dial in 2 degrees of negative camber in your minivan. :) However, they're cheap.

I like the BFG Traction T/As that I bought to replace the 712s on my Maxima. Handle decently in the dry and got me home just fine on that day that Greg Fischel blew the snow/ice forecast completely. Carl Fisher has a set on his rallycross Neon.

Regarding the BFG Traction TAs, I've got to say that I haven't been too impressed with the wear. I can't have more than about 20k miles on them now and they're already mostly worn down. It also seems like they spin pretty easily on wet pavement considering the tread design, although I suspect my alignment is off and that would be a factor.

Still, I think I'll try something else for my next set of tires.

I like the Kumho 712's for street tires. We are finishing out our second set on the Celica, got 35K miles on each set with (sometimes radical) AX alignment. Never had a problem with traction, don't think there's a GOOD ice and snow tire except possibly dedicated winter tires. I'll be buying another set for the Celica, the price can't be beat, anything else close is twice as much! YMMV!
