Is there anyone in the triangle these days that sells Redline oils? I'm picking up a Miata today, and I'd like to change the trans and diff fluids. Apparently redline is the preferred choice.

Thanks!

Someone is welcome to delete one of these duplicate threads. I hit a SQL error that I didn't write down! and then there were two.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. What did you get and when are you posting pics?

I pick this up at 3:00PM today:

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/ctd/4355753928.html

Got it for a bit less than his asking price. Nice car. Black over tan, leather package, Torsen. It's VERY original, with all the good and bad that brings with it. Needs a timing belt job, the fluids changed, and I think the spark plug wires are original to the car. The battery is a Mazda battery, but surely it's not 15 years old...

Felt strong to me - as strong as a stock 99 Miata feels, anyway. The shifter feels outrageously good. All the other cars I looked at had floppy shifters, but this one feels nearly S2000 good. No shakes at highway speeds. On the passenger side it looks like the previous owner bottomed it out on a speed bump and bent the seam inwards a little. Not ideal, but I chose to forgive it that. I know from experience how easy it is to do that with a low car.

There are some cosmetic blemishes but nothing too terrible. A few door dings here and there, and one scuff on the front bumper, where it looks like someone with a truck didn't see it and bumped it with a trailer hitch, it's about that width. All fairly easy fixes should I so choose. For $5500, I'm fine with it not being as perfect as my last few cars have been.

New top, which is the wrong color, but at least it's new. That might end up bothering me more than the door dings.

Brand new tires. Unfortunately they're Kumho Ecsta ASXs. Not sure what to do about that - maybe a second set of wheels for the ASXs for street use, and then put something sticky on the original wheels.

The seller is a used car dealer, an Iranian guy who goes by John. He said, without prompting, that he'd sold a higher mileage, silver Miata to someone in "Tarheel Car Club." I asked if it was us, he said he thought so. Seemed like an honest enough guy to me, and didn't object when I got out my OBD code scanner, my paint meter, or did things like spill coolant around the radiator while taking the cap off of a running car.

Nice car. The battery could be original. The Panasonic batteries in early cars have been known to last 15+ years. I replaced the original one in my car for a light weight Odyssey and at 12+ years at the time it was still going strong.

T-Hoff is where I usually buy Redline.

So I want MTL for the transmission, and 75W90 gear oil for the diff. Have I got that right?

Finding info on stuff like fluids for Miatas...wow. I just looked up what kind of antifreeze to use, and I came away with more questions than answers.

Sounds like mine, but the guy I bought my Miata from was 'Murican and very, very proud of it.

This is the combo I have been using for years. You may want to check/change the fluid in the shift turret also as they can dry out over time. If you have a kid in the house, the nose sucker, bulb suction thing works well for removing whatever old fluid remains, just don't tell your wife  If you decide to do this, it's a good time to replace the inner an outer rubber shift boots, because chances are one or both are cracked.

Did he talk with an accent at all? I think he's a citizen, but I asked him where he was from and he said originally Iran. Said someone was looking for a car with the limited slip, and knew how to spot that based on some other piece of trim, maybe the sport package body doodads. He didn't remember for sure. I asked him if the guy's name was James, he wasn't sure of that either. Anyway, yeah, I wonder if it's the same guy.

I love this club. :) Thanks Jordan.

Are the boots part numbers 14 and 15 on this page?

http://www.parts.com/parts/1999/Mazda/M ... am=5426260

If full retail is $34 and online is $22, I'll probably see if one of the local dealers has one on the shelf. It's close enough, including shipping, that I'd be willing to pay a little extra to have it in hand for the weekend.

I found an online version of the factory shop manual, too. It's a scan though, so it's not searchable or even clickable. But it's a start. Mercedes and Honda shop manuals are both quite a lot better, IMO. The MB manuals state fluid quantities in the given category - e.g., if I'm looking at the section for replacing a radiator, it tells me what kind of coolant, how much, and at what ratio.

This is what I found:

http://www.mellens.net/mazda/index.html

I'm getting excited. Two hours to go! :)

MT90 is what the 5MT seems to like. We ran MTL in Ram's and it got notchy pretty soon thereafter (5k miles?). 90 weight vs 80 weight.

United Auto on Broad Street (right near Watt's Grocery) in Durham had Redline. But they have crappy hours (like 8-5pm).

I put extra virgin olive oil in the shift turret of Ram's car....

Part identified as #14 is the outer boot (seals between the transmission tunnel and shft lever) I think 15 is just a piece of felt insulation. The inner boot seals the turret on the transmission. In the link below the photo shows outer boot on the left, inner on the right.
