Bought a new tow vehicle today...2004 Ford Excursion. Couldn't find the exact config I wanted around here, so I had a dealer friend in Richmond call around. He found what I wanted at Petersburg Ford. He told them I was willing to pay $500 over "net net net" (which is $500 over the dealers *total* cost after everything). They said they'd do it, so he called me and put me in touch with them.
I call, they quoted it exactly that way. They then added in the current $2000 factory rebate, the $500 rebate for me being an AQHA member (probably worth it to join if you plan to buy a Ford even if you don't like horses!), and I financed it with Ford Motor Credit at 6.9% and got another $1000 off. All in all, I doubt there is a better deal to be had.
Best of all, they arranged everything remotely very well...they faxed the credit app and I faxed it back and they got that approved before I got there. When I got there the truck was right in front of the door ready to go and my salesperson greeted me at the door. She took me straight to finance, I signed everything (it was printed and ready), then I went back out, signed another thing or two, she showed me a few things about the truck, and I left. Oh, barely 24 hours passed from the first time I called them until I went to pick it up, too.
I've bought a lot of vehicles, and several remotely, and none have gone any smoother than this. It was quite refreshing.
Anyway, if anyone is looking to buy a Ford and willing to drive a couple hours north, try Susan Fulcher at Petersburg Ford.
