Are there any shops in Raleigh, or nearby, that can make SS brake lines?

Jason,

I assume you mean the SS braided/teflon flex lines. If so, I made the ones for my race car . . . tedious work with a "few" punctures in my fingers . . . for each fitting! :D Check out an Earl's catalog and/or the appropriate Carroll Smith book for the techniques. I can offer hints, etc. Of course, pressure testing must be done on the car if you do them yourself. Note that I used the standard "race quality" Aeroquip AN fittings which are designed for relatively easy assembly without special tools.

This page from the Pegasus catalog has a good overview of the process and of the fittings. http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pdfs/068.pdf

Craig Gelston's shop (Carolina Import Works) on Capital Blvd put my SS brake lines on. I ordered them ahead of time and his shop installed them. He was very careful.

The great thing I love about Craig's shop is that he road races Corvettes. He's also a club sponsor in the TT series. So, he understand us. He doesn't look at me funny when I ask for something unusual. His mechanics are very good.

I highly recommend him. (872-0350 is the number)

Dick, I've been checking out the AN fittings, but didn't want my first attempt at using those fittings to be on my brake system. :)

Solid or braided?

If braded: Steve's Corvette in Wilson is the local AFCO dealer and
has plenty of -3 braded lines in stock with the associated 3/16 inverted
flair to AN adaptors.

If solid :Search on Stainless Steel Brakes (believe
they are in Fla?) and do kits for various cars or sell tubing in bulk.

Good double flaring tools can be fould in NAPA on on line from
Snap-On tools. I got mine from Snap-On for about $45.00

I can't believe I missed this thread, since I'm working on the same thing.

As they say on the forums --bump-- with a new twist:

Is there anyone that makes hydraulic lines in our area that can make a custom set of lines with crimped-on fittings like you get when you buy a set of lines from Goodridge or the like? This is the pre-assembled stuff you see on the bottom of the Pegasus PDF.

I'm trying to do the same thing (custom lines) except my application won't be under pressure and won't be conducting brake fluid. It will replace two plastic lines with banjo fittings that conduct oil from the oil metering pump to the engine on my Mazda 13B which get scalded by heat and crack/break.

AN fittings are expensive. You are cheaper (better?) off getting a set made by a company with crimped on ends. I got a set of 4 brake lines for $90 or so for my RX-7 and the Miata is about the same.

Jason, have you checked if Goodridge or the like makes some for your application or if they will?

$90 / 4 = about $22 each, which is cheaper than those AN fittings and bulk line from what I've searched on Summit and the above PDF at Pegasus.

Bad news: from what I've found so far, you can't do the crimp-on ends yourself, since it requires an expensive crimping device (like several thousand dollars worth), which is why you need a shop to make them for you, but it still should be cheaper than the AN lines.

Thoughts?

Ashraf,

I'm not sure what you need but you might check with Raleigh Durham Rubber and Gasket, The Parker Store or any of the other companies listed in the Hose Couplings & Fittings and Hose & Tubings sections of the Real Yellow pages. Raleigh Durham Rubber and Gasket is in the same industrial park as Krause and England. The Parker Store is just off the Belt Line at the Yonkers Road exit.

Carbotech will custom-make SS braided brake lines - I wonder if they might be able to help you out. Shelby, NC is kinda' local. [/img]
