Anyone got any recommendations for someone that does counter top installations? Probably going to go with some fairly cheap laminate product from Lowes or the like, so nothing particularly difficult.

For you or someone else? I've done three of them myself.

i know a guy that does really nice work with marble.

i have used Apex Cabinets in the past, and i also know an independant guy that builds nice cabinets too. he could handle your tops i'm sure.

don't go to Lowes Stephen, you just never know what kinda jack-leg installer they might send to your house.

Not for me, this is for my sister. Pretty sure marble is out of the price range. I've never dealt with Lowes on installation for anything, so I wasn't sure how good/bad they would be.

The issue is you just don't know - could be ok, could be bad. Malia's dad actually worked as a contractor (for a contractor) for Lowes for a while... when their contract was re-negotiated, Lowes cut the contact pay per job so significantly that there was no way that they could afford to keep Gary on the jobs - and he was NOT making much money as it was. The question is - are you comfortable with guys making $9-$12/hr, who speak little english doing your home improvements?

So why not just have Gary do this job on his own then?

In the past year, we had Lowes install carpet and new counter tops. I was very pleased with both. You figure in the ease of arranging the install and the scheduling, it is a sweet setup. Then if something does go wrong, you have a direct source to go back to. Lowes was prompt with follow ups to see if we were satisfied with the work.

With the economy the way it is, there are probably 100 contractors lined up wanting to get Lowes business. So the current ones are not going to risk doing a poor job. The counter top guy (white, male, English speaking) and I had a nice chat about it. As for Lowes cutting the costs, welcome to the real economy.

Your other option is post on forums and search craigslist. Good luck ;-)
