A co-worker is looking for a better quote to replace a headgasket on his 200,000+ mile Civic. Current quote is north of $1000, but that includes plugs and wires (also have 200k miles on them). $350 to just pull the head and have it checked at a machine shop.

Anyone know an independent shop that will do a good job, or a (competent) backyard mechanic that wants to make some extra money?

The car isn't running, so the more local to Durham/Chapel Hill the better.

If they end up being stuck with that price, might want to consider a whole new motor. Depending on model civic you might be able to get a whole used longblock for just a little more than that.
