Anyone know where I can get some 3/16 or 1/4" x 2" steel bar cut to 18" long? I'd prefer to pick it up locally in case I have to mess with the dimensions trying to getting it into the car.

The application is to make brackets for the Miata floor pan for some seats. Is 3/16 thick enough or should I go right for 1/4"? My main concern is ease of bending it into the shape I need to match the floor pan.

I've gotten stuff like this at Lowes or Home Depot. I think they have a 3-foot stick and a 5 or 6 footer. Not sure of the exact thickness and width, but they have several different sizes, so probably have what you need.

This is probably the most convenient option if they have what you want. Not sure how their price would compare to any other steel places around.

+1 on Lowe's or Home Depot.

The price per foot will be ALOT more than if you bought it at a steel supply place (Dillon Supply in Raleigh for example), but you can buy just the right amount- Dillon Supply will only sell it in 20 ft lengths.

The convince is worth it for me to go to Lowes. I only need a total of 6ft anyway (Unless something goes awry). There is a Lowes about a mile from my house.

I walk to that Lowes all the time :)....I wish Lowes rented lawn aerators....I wouldn't have to borrow a truck from a neighbor....just have it drag me across MLK :).

They have a good bit of stock (steel and aluminum)...I got my bars for my camber gauge there.

James,

Depending upon what seats you have and how you want to mount them, I have one of my seats mounted on the stock slider with just some pieces of flat bar or thicker sheet steel and mounted that to the seat and the slider.

Just a thought

Rob

They are Momo Starts (Side mount). I'm going to try mounting them to steel bar attached to the OEM seat mount points first and see where that puts Laura and my heads. She's too tall with the stock seats when wearing a helmet. I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of playing around to find a seating position that works for both of us.

On a related note does anyone know a shop in the area that has a metal brake for hire?

As an update. Mark at Performance Chassis suggested I try Fabco Industries in Cary. They were able to do what I needed. They have a huge press that should be able to handle anything automotive.
