Just like the thread title says. Is anyone an Amsoil dealer? I've been hearing good things for many years now, and it's time for a transmission fluid change for the S2000, so I'm considering making the switch away from Redline. Are any of you dealers? I found several, but so far, none have returned my phone calls. And after n number of searches, amsoil.com stupidly locks you out of searching their dealer database. :(

I've tried Amsoil in the past (Jack Hall used to be a dealer), but I really like Royal Purple gear oil. You can now get it at Pep Boys and some Advance Auto/AutoZone.

We put it in Bryan's C6 and it made a nice change, especially when the car was cold. - AB

I don't dissagree with Aaron, I've used both and have been happy with both. If you want to try the Amsoil, you can get it at Loop Road Auto Parts in Garner which I know isn't very convenient for you.

Ditto. I tried the Amsoil in the Z-24 and switched to the Royal Puple Synchromax.

RP Synchromax in my 540i trans also, works great. Made shifting easier than the Redline that was in there...

Could you expand on what changed. When I changed the transmission fluid in the Boxster I did not feel like spending $80 a quart for the Porsche labeled oil. A independent shop sold me some Shell oil that was supposed to be the same oil. Ever since then when it is cold the first shift to second needed to be very firm or it will not go in gear. There is no grinding or other noise. It just does not want to go into second gear.

Do S2000s not like the OEM (white cap) gear oil? I've driven an s2000 about a 6 or 7 times (all brand new) and the shifting has always been amazing. Does the add pack/FM pack wear out soon?

I ran the Civic on 10w40 conventional PCMO in the gear box from 55k to 180k and she shifted like butter :).

Anyway, if I were going to put a boutique oil in my car it'd be Motul Gear 300.

That's pretty similar to what the Corvette symptoms were. When cold, the shifts were stiff and tough to engage. Royal Purple Synchromax fixed it. I know others that have used it in different cars with similar problems and it improved it, if it didn't fix it completely. - AB

I don't know about the white cap, but I do know that the "correct" Honda MTF for an S2000 currently has a green label on the bottle. I haven't used it since I bought the car; shortly after I got it, I went to Redline MTL. And it was fine, I just wanted to try something different.

I ended up dealing with an Amsoil dealer a little outside Raleigh who would sell to me on a Saturday. Whitney and I put the Amsoil in the car this afternoon. The transmission does feel less notchy when stone cold. I have a Ti shift knob on the car when driving it on the road, and that knob is very light weight, so I can feel notchiness readily. The Amsoil really did make a difference. Once the transmission is warm, though, the difference seems negligible. We also put Amsoil 10W-30 in the motor.

All of this is largely unnecessary, I'm sure, but I like putting boutique oils in the car. It makes me feel like I'm making up for all the time it spends on the rev limiter.

I ran Honda MTF in the car until about 2 months ago. I put the Redline in and did notice an improvement when cold but it feels the same once warmed up. I have been running Mobil 1 in the rear diff and I am not exactly happy with its wear so far. I drained the diff after about 6,000 miles and 2 Prosolos and the fluid was burnt to hell. I have Mobil One in there right now but I am going to try either the LE stuff or some Royal Purple. My engine sees nothing but Royal Purple since I finished the complete break in process at 5,000 miles.

Keith, LE 1605 holds up nicely in mine. It's red in color when it's new, and when I take it out, it's still red. I'm impressed with it. I change mine at similar intervals to you, intervals which I'm sure people think we're out of our minds for. :)

Tom at Auto Sport Gallery keeps trying to talk me into trying LE in my motor and transmission. I'll see what the Amsoil looks like when I send it off to be analyzed. If it gets good marks, I'm considering becoming a dealer myself.

I find it interesting that there is so much Royal purple usage (engine and/or gear oil) in our club.

UOAs and lots of tribiologist commentary has it at the bottom of the list (not just among synthetics, but including conventional oils) time after time after time. Despite my eduction being in MEMS, I'm definitely a 'what works in theory, doesn't always work in practice' kind of person, but the data is quite bad for most RP products (check out BITOG). Anyway, I'm glad it's working for someone, but I'm holding off.

For a gear lubricant that allows for better cold shifting, what that means is the friction modifier package is such that it is adding additional friction at cold temps....which means more friction at operating temp. Since tranny synchros operate based on the principle of friction between the synchro cones and the conical race on the gears, more friction than is neccessary means faster gear engagement, but also means more friction (read: heat) for the rest of the moving pieces of the transmission which is not ideal for wear in my opinion. There is a fine line with making the synchros operate in reasonable time frames and minimizing wear at the bearings and other moving parts in the transmission. I would much rather self synchronize while the tranny is cold and have her operate at ideal circumstances when at operating temp.

That is interesting to hear. I honestly had never heard that. I get a 40% discount on both Mobil One and RP products through my dad's job so that is why I started using the much more often throughout the car. I may be switching to Amsoil then as well if it works out well in Karl's car.

I just switched to Rotella for the engine. I still run redline in the trans and diff. The prices for redline motor oil have gotten ridiculous. I will be sending off a sample at the next change.

Same here, that's good and inexpensive! I use Pennsoil Syncroshift in my transmissions. That stuff makes a DSM shift "ok", its good shit :).

I don't have a rearend anymore
