To the club in general,

I was in the middle of ordering rollbar padding from Apex Performance tonight in order to use up a gift certificate I received for Christmas. I noticed the THSCC link from their main page and it hit me that we might have an affiliation with them worth a discount. I went to the latest "Heel & Toe" and sure enough found a discount code.

So, I said all of that to say thank you to whomever in the club negotiated the partnership with Apex. Discounts are always good and any time we can show our advertisers that we use their products, I am all for it.

i've ordered a few things from apex this year, all have arrived well packed and very quickly. i even asked linda a question about a camera mount and she answered me - today!

as a matter of fact i'm sitting here right now putting together my "big" apex order to get ready for the 2010 season. at first it was just going to be a traqmate, but every time i go in the garage i discover something else that i need. camera mount. large rear view mirror. passenger harness. motul brake fluid. tie down straps. roll bar padding. eye bolts, snap clips, backing plates. if they sold sparco seats i'd be in debtors prison by new years day.

I'm thinking about getting a new helmet from them for the Feb. HPDE since my autocross helmet is an "M" :-( Can anyone recommend a particular brand of helmet? Other than I don't want to spend much money, they all look the same to me...

Call Linda at Apex. She's nice, she's knowledgeable, and she's helpful. Apex may not have the absolute rock bottom prices, but with the service you get from them, it is generally more than worth the price difference.

The question is which helmet fits you right - they all have slight variations and some fit great on some people and poorly on others. Malia and I both bought Zamp FSA-1, one of the cheaper SA rated helmets, and we've both been reasonably happy with them. Apex carries these.

The other not-quite-as-cheap option is the G-Force models. We have a few of the "modified" versions in our track loaner pool. These fit me ok, but had some pressure points that started to get pretty annoying after 30 minutes. They fit others great, though, so it's good to try any of them out if you can.

Apex does have a pretty good sizing return policy, though - so it's not catastrophic if you get one that doesn't fit you quite right.

you really need to try on several types. VIR for one place has some in stock.

I happened to be working in Statesville one day and drove over to the Simpson store on the way home.

I've been using a Simpson Super Voyager for a few years now.

and while i understand the "don't want to spend much money on a helmet" theory, i have to ask. what exactly is your head worth?

When I was up at VIR the CDOC store was trying to unload their helmets. All the SA2005 were marked way down. They were waiting on the SA2010 helmets. I got a Bell Vortex for a little over $300. They were listing for $700 or so at the beginning of the year. Too hard to pass up.

After having a G-Force the Bell is a big improvement. The G-Force cost me under $200 back in 02 I think. The G-Force comes in XS-S-M-L-XL. This is fine if your head is exactly what they call a "Medium" etc... The Bell comes in 1/8" size increments. The fit is much better overall.
