Lightbar for the bus?

This topic came up a long time ago -- a BRIGHT flashing lightbar for the bus might be useful for signaling driver's meeting, announcing that we need workers for the next heat, and for signaling the trophies. Then again it could be annoying. But it would still be cool to have.

Just ran across this one on Craigslist.

hey all... i'm listing this for my safety officer at my department. He is selling a Streethawk Lightbar. It has the rotators and I can attest, everything works GREAT! it is very clean. it was used on a medic car about 9 years ago, and then taken off when our whole dept went paramedic. its sat in our shed for a while and he got it from the department. well he changed his mind on using it so its up for grabs. first one with cash gets it. these things have retailed for over 400 in this condition... he's wanting 160. again, everything works and we can show you that by holding the wires on your battery and it will blind you!

it has the red rotators, ally wig wags, center chrome area for speaker for PA use, amber lgihts in back, red on front in a takedown pattern.

i have an older version of it on my old truck and they are awesome.

Isn't that illegal to have that on a non-emergency vehicle?

I'd rather see us put the money into a new PA system for the pits. We continuously talk about making the drivers meetings better - but it seems the far end of the pits tend to have more than its share of people who just don't seem to make the meetings. And it's typically not the people who "know better" that arrive late and end up parking there.

Some clubs just get an old car head unit that has a working FM tuner and ideally line outputs. Then get an el-cheapo two channel car amp. Mount a couple speakers on a tripod. Mount radio and amp to some sort of box that also holds a car battery. Wire up. Put out at remote location and use FM transmitter to broadcast to it. Put someone in charge of it/them to take home and keep on a battery charger.

Build a couple. Shouldn't be too hard to do. The most expensive part is probably getting waterproof speakers. Put everything else in a rubbermaid tub to keep dry.

I personally think something like that is a LOT more useful than the light bar on the bus. The light bar is cool and all, I admit, but...

From the NC DOT website. Under - Horns and Sirens.

"Only law enforcement and emergency vehicles may have emergency lights or sirens."

The only "flashy" thing you are allowed is the emergency flashers built into the car.

Made me think of a stunt I did when I was a young lad. Installed a wig-wag on my SuperSport. It was pretty cool and scared the crap out of some of my buddies when I came up behind them at night and turned them on. :lol:

It was funny right until the car behind me turned his on. It wasn't a SuperSport and it wasn't my buddy. :shock:

Boy did I get a beating for that one...

What about just throwing it on top of the bus or trailer at the beginning of the event.

I think it's cool and all, but I don't know that it would be that noticeable on a bright sunny day.

I really think a couple of those is a good idea given some of our sites...

Good question. I think we have a problem of "tinkeritits" with all the PA stuff.

Scott, VK and I put one of these remote PA systems together 3 years ago. I havent seen it in awhile.

I heard someone took it apart and installed the radio in the bus for the times where it's daily driven. Not sure why we cannibalized a perfectly good remote PA system when we could have gotten a $50 head unit (or less) from Walmart or PepBoys instead?
