Kendt made a funny... :)

:?: Is there a history here - or was I just so heatstroked that I didn't notice there was one or something?

This should be sticky and mandatory reading for noobs. ;-)

Oh come on Les. We have to let the noobs sink into oblivion with a few of the taboo subjects. It's entertaining.

Considering how miserably f-ing hot it was on Sunday, couldn't the club get a retractable awning for the trailer? That would cover one of the things wanted from an RV, and it would be there no matter what tow vehicle is used.

Running on a platform of a bus awning, generator and spinny thing for workers. He's got my vote.

A minor update with somewhat limited usefulness...

I spoke with a rep at Bully Dog this afternoon. I didn't find her to be especially knowledgeable, so I may try again, but the story from her is that if the transmission is already slipping, their particular shift kit won't help us. She said "it's too far gone already."

Of course when I asked her "well wouldn't bumping up the line pressure alleviate some of the symptoms of the slipping?" I got sort of a non answer. I don't think she knew much. So I'm going to keep pursuing this option. Hell, for a $90 investment, I think we ought to roll the dice on it anyway.

Part of the Banks power systems for more recent electronically controlled vehicles does nothing more than firm up the shifts and they state this is because it not only increases performance, it also helps with transmission longevity. It is very much true that the sloppy shifts are for comfort but are harder on transmissions, and it's no secret that Ford automatic transmissions are often not nearly as durable as one would like, particularly in truck applications and even more particularly a few years ago.

I say try the upgrade. If it doesn't work and it's time for a rebuild, we'll still have it. I think it's a desirable thing either way.

Seems like most of the rental car company shuttle buses I've ridden in feel like they already have a shift kit . . .

More seriously, someone could post the question on SCCA Forums and ask Steve Hoelscher (former owner of a transmission shop) to offer suggestions. Provide model, year, engine, trans code, etc.

Another minor update. To hear it from Matt Nicholson, who experienced a transmission failure on his 00 (I think) F-250, his response was that once the thing has started throwing overdrive lights, it's too far gone to "fix" with a trans pack. Maybe the girl at Bully Dog was right after all.

I'm in the midst of posting to thedieselstop.com to see what those guys have to say about it. These guys are experts and are usually money on debug issues.

Just to put this all in perspective (because the forum "enthusiasts" are often not very tolerant of issues and may blow this out of proportion:

The trans light has been coming on for more than a year. Every time I have driven it since it was run low, it's been blinking during hard shifts while warm. If it's just going to get worse, it certainly hasn't been getting worse too quickly.

Thanks for continuing to dive into this Karl.

Folks let's try and keep this one on topic. It's kind of important.

Got a reply already over on the diesel stop. It should be noted that from me and Matt's experience, these guys are typically *money* when it comes to troubleshooting these trucks. Here's the first response.
ncreasing line pressure somewhat will help almost any E4OD as the factory spec is a bit too low.

The "hunting" RPM that you feel is likely the TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) locking and unlocking. This is often caused by a bad tach sensor or a bad FIPL (TPS) sensor. It would be a good idea to replace them both as either will ruin a good trans if malfunctioning.

These are mechanical sensors that would be electronic inputs on those new fangled PSD motors. The IDI transmissions tend to have the transmissions killed more since they will run with a bad sensor, where a PSD will not.

Also if your speedometer needle has significant fluctations you should replace the speed sensor.
So between the Bully Dog shift kit and replacing a handful of sensors, my own vote is to throw say $500 at the thing and see if we can make it last a little longer. The speedometer does wander a hair sometimes, so I think this guy might be right on.

Details to follow as I receive them. Looks like I've created a bit of a project for myself.

Karl-

I got Mike a Haynes manual after we got the bus. I believe it has some mechanical value and might help doing the R&R on the TPS and Tach sensors. I just got done doing a TPS sensor on a car. Pretty simple to test one out and verify it is within range. Just need a volt/ohm meter. I could probably help you out with that if needed.

Don't we have a good discount with the local Ford dealer so we can order these parts?

TPS sensors may "ohm out" just fine, but still not really be doing what they are supposed to. It's hard to see on a multimeter sometimes when the thing is giving "jagged" output rather than smooth. Depends a lot on the multimeter. A TPS sensor can certainly ohm out to proper high and low ranges but still be erroring in the middle, too.

Replace it while you're replacing/upgrading stuff. It won't cost much, shouldn't be horrible as far as labor, and looks to be a good idea to be freshened up even if it isn't bad *yet*.
