Since we've got these nifty new THSCC forums (or fora :-)), some of you newer THSCC members may not be aware that there is also a THSCC email list. We've moved most of the "conversation" off of the email list (thank you Jason!) leaving it to be our primary means of getting club info out to members quickly.

If you aren't on the THSCC email list & would like to make sure that you receive any last-minute event changes, etc, please subscribe yourself using the following instructions:

1) Go to http://listserv.unc.edu
2) From the right-hand side "User Tools" menu, click "Search for Lists" (the last item on that menu).
3) In the "Search String" box, type thscc and click the "Search" button.
4) Click the "Subscribe" button.
5) Enter your email addr, your real Firstname Lastname, and a password. Then click the little "subscribe" button to the bottom right.

Once you are subscribed, starting from this same URL, you can manage your list subscription (change your email address, your password, your mail receipt type i.e. "as posted" or "digest mode"), read list posts, & search the list archives. To do so:

1) Go to http://listserv.unc.edu
2) From the left-hand side "Log In" menu, click "List Members"
3) Enter your subscribed email address and click the little "ok" button.
4) Enter your password and click the "ok" button.
5) Click "thscc" under the "Forum Name" column.
6) Now you need only click the desired tabs and perform the desired functions.

The procedure above no longer works; is there a new procedure?

I don't believe that we have a listserv anymore. Facebook and the website are the best ways to keep up to date.

If there's interest, I'd be glad to create a list for us on NC State's listserver. Or Google Groups might be a viable option too. Or if no one cares about all that, we can just continue to try to remember to check here and Facebook for announcements.

I tend to think there is no need for a THSCC listserve these days. Prior to the forum being put in place the listserve was quite popular and active. However it died a quick death once the forum was put in place. I see little reason a new one would fair any better. Other social media platforms would likely do better if we wanted to expand beyond the forum and Facebook. That is my two cents.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Ok, well I seem to have inadvertently created a list... I contacted our listserver admin to ask whether I would be allowed to create a list for an external organization, and being the go-getters that our IT people are (!), they just went ahead and did it. If I hear from the appropriate club officers that they want it deleted, I'll do that immediately. But otherwise if people want to subscribe, they can send email to mj2@lists.ncsu.edu with SUBSCRIBE THSCC in the body of the message.

This list should be considered unofficial unless the appropriate officers decide to sanction it (I am not an officer). If an officer with access to the current members roster wants to coordinate with me on restricting access to members in good standing, please get in touch. Otherwise I don't currently have a way to do that, so I'll just approve every request to subscribe that comes in until I hear otherwise.

It's set so only subscribed members can post to it, and I have to manually approve every subscription, so spam shouldn't be a problem.

(hopefully I can identify a spam bot if one tries to subscribe!)

I think listservs are still widely used in neighborhoods to keep people in the loop. If it ain't broke...

Well it wouldn't be my first time being accused of being a porn bot... ;) But on another note, this is turning into a fascinating inquiry into folks' preferred modes of information consumption. Personally I see email and forum-type mechanisms, like this one or Facebook, as being optimized for two very different types of communication, so I am intrigued to learn that at least some people view them as competitors in an either/or sense. Forums are great when you want information to persist over time and require people to choose to go looking for it. Email is optimized for more time-sensitive communication that doesn't need to be archived and doesn't require extra effort for people to access. The MSReg email system provides some functionality in the latter category (though it only works for one-way broadcasts and is tied to specific events), and that sees some use, so that would seem to imply there might be some utility in an email list. But I would defer to our leaders on this.

I would say it's not a good idea to use NC State resources for non-NCSU activities. I know it's a simple listserve, but the club should probably use some other service. I gave up on NCSU listserves and switched to NCSU Google Groups. It's not perfect, but much easier to manage.

Yes, my department (Psychology) has switched to Google Groups for all our internal lists too. Those don't allow non-NCSU email addresses though, so Majordomo is still a necessary evil when you need to include external folks. The free Google Groups might be an option for us here, though I'm not sure how well they cope with non-Google email addresses. There are dozens of external group lists on Majordomo, so using NCSU's resource for this kind of thing seems to be sanctioned. But this is probably all moot anyway, since this idea appears to be DOA on the Club side.

Nice to meet another NC Stater in the club... What department are you in, Chris?

I'm in Biological Sciences. I have have a few Genetics advisees that get Psych minors in preparation for Genetic Counseling School. The external addresses is an issue for sure. Only 2 weeks of classes left!
