These seem to take up a lot of time and are often unnecessary (who other than the Triad prez has ever been denied?). I would rather see a select group of people get together and simply read a report into the record for the newsletter.

Any other thoughts on the matter?

I think it's part of the bylaws to vote on them in meetings, but I might be wrong.

I like hearing about the new people who are joining the club - what cars they have, what their interests are, where they work, etc. I definitely don't think we should skip it.

When we have 30 apps, it does get a bit tedious. How long and tedious depends on at least two things-

1) the style and personality of the person reading them (how much detail, how much time to make fun of this and that, etc.)
2) how much interupption and heckling there is from the crowd

That being said, it is an important part of a business meeting. We get a chance to recognize new members, which is especially important when they are present. It is their one and only moment in the spotlight when they initially join the club. The members are given a sense of how quick the club is growing, the types of people we are drawing in, and every now and then, we may remember the name of the person as a new member when we meet them and help them out.

I say keep it, but on nights when we have 30 of these things, perhaps we could step up the pace a bit. Perhaps on those nights with lots of apps, we should quickly identify at the beginning which of those people are actually at the meeting and devote a little more time to them, and a little less time to the ones that are not present.

Some of it is tradition. Tarheel is full of traditions. And I think Diane may be right that they have to be voted in.

I'm curious. Where are these bylaws located?

I don't remember getting a copy when I registered.

We think the original copy is inscribed on the back of a napkin from 1964 and presently on display in the Smithsonian.

How bout a counter-motion - that people stop talking over whoever is presenting? It would be much less awful if people would just shut up.

JMO of course. Apart from that I kinda like it, it gives me ample opportunities to make fun of VWs in the minutes.

I'll second that motion! (But then again, I don't go to too many meetings so I guess I should stay out of this one.)

Back in the Spitzner years we did also turn down a guy who drove a 911. But he worked for the EPA, never had a ticket, and had a low check #.
I think we sent him his check back but you would have to see Bowie about that. :D

It's part of the bylaws to make fun of prospective members at the meetings, not necessarily vote on them. Have you noticed how few of them actually attend the meeting in which their applications are presented? The word must be leaking out.

Diane is correct. I have been assured by Bowie as a coporation we
have by-laws as required. Wheather they were scratched on the
back of a napkin or a '64 MG owners manual is a question for
Bowie.

I like to think this is part of tradition but making good fun of member applications is typically a highlight of the evening.
