I always try to give my two son in laws (to stereotype them- a musician and professional writer) some kind of tool or knife to point (no pun intended) to a more self reliant life. I saw this while surfing the internet:

https://www.dtcreativestore.com/products/amenitee-15-in-1-stainless-multi-tool

any other ideas.

Go full on with something like this...

Ok, maybe something like this...

Seriously, do they appreciate and use these or just put them in a drawer somewhere? If they do, they like might like items that fit into the EDC (everyday carry) category.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

The ad says it has the 14MM. I think that's the 9/16th center cutout.

This makes me mad all over again at the TSA agent in San Jose who confiscated my UNC Alumni key ring tag. It had the mailing address of the Alumni Assoc on the back, so that if I lost my keys, the finder could just drop them in the mail and they would be returned to me. It also had 3 tabs on its perimeter that could be used as flat blade screwdrivers. Being certain that I would use it to dis-assemble the airplane while in flight, he said it had to go in the trash right then. Oh well, it had a good 25 year run.

From what Cline has told me about his SILs, the best tool he could give either of them would be a debit card linked to his CHA business account.

Wait, who is it that would return something with UNC on it? :)

Seems like an enterprising individual could set up shop with some pens, padded envelopes and a smartphone with credit card swiper in the vicinity of the TSA line wearing a bright shirt that says "Don't let TSA take your stuff away!"

I looked around for that guy once in Texas when I had to give up a pocket knife. I would have paid its new value for the convenience to have it shipped back to me and avoid that crappy feeling of giving up/loosing a valued tool.

Screwdrivers under 7" are allowed. I used to travel with all sorts of 7" and under shivs, er screwdrivers when we were building our network.

It's been many years now (10-11, maybe more), but at RDU in the old terminal TSA line there was a mailing kiosk setup right next to it. I was flying with my son, and he had forgotten about his multi-tool device, so he easily mailed it to himself. I assume that was too convenient and prevented TSA from meeting their collection metrics and hence was eliminated.
