... of the club and what we do. So someone mentioned this and it makes sense to me to try to pull this off. Does anyone have any video from the past track event other than in-car stuff? Any vidoe scans of the paddock or cars on track? I'm also thinking we have 2 more events, 1 for rallyx and 1 for autox. I'd like to get some video of cars on course and some in-car along w/ grid and paddock shots and people. At the last autox I'd like to get a group shot of everyone saying something like "you need to drive w/ Tarheel sports car club". Along with all of this I'd like some testimonials from some of the members. I figure this is a way to promote the club and get more drivers.

From there a crap load of editing then condense this down to about 5 min of what the club does and post it out to youtube. We can add this link to the back of our business cards to hand out. I'd be happy to put this together. All I have is windows movie maker, but it works well and I'm starting to get used to using it.

Thoughts?

Sounds good Rodney. Maybe you could enlist some production/editing help from the students at the college you worked with in the past? They seem to be pretty good behind the camera, but in front of it, not so much.

That's good though VK, I'll ask the professor if he could help out....

I wish I'd known you wanted that. We took a ton of in-car stuff, but nothing else.

Here's a really crappy still of the paddock:

If you want some in-car video, then ours is not bad. We put the camera forward in the car, so it's mostly track.

I know the topic of getting some drone footage at an event was talked about before. Did anyone ever figure out the details of doing that safely and without it causing problems. I think some good drone footage would really work well.

Check out some of the footage from this...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUVoYA7ZtvU

Imagine the footage from a drone as it follows a car as it navigates a course, etc. I think it could be quite dramatic and a real showcase for the sport. I think the last time this topic came up, I was curious if the club had a "drone policy" for events and if there were insurance issues. Regardless of the existence (or not) of a formal drone policy, I can see some one-off use for club promotional purposes.

That's a tough conversation. I would think that on one level, that conversation should be between the driver of the vehicle and the drone operator, as they are the two that stand to have their property damaged by contact on the course. But then you have to consider the safety of the corner workers and people watching. You don't want the corner workers watching the drone instead of the car, but at the same time, you don't want them ignoring the drone, in case it comes down on top of them.

With that said, I agree it would be a cool addition, and hopefully the officers can find a way for it to happen. Maybe you could get some footage during setup when there is no one at the worker stations?

I do agree it's not that easy. I don't want to be Debbie Downer, but here is my list of issues (overlap with some of yours)

* Property damage and personal injury issues. I don't want some massive out of control octacopter crashing into me and potentially cutting the shit of of me (Google image search is your disturbing friend here).
* Club insurance issues (exclusions or non-coverage in our policy)
* How many do you allow at once? What if you have a bunch of people wanting wanting to operate at the same time?
* How close do you allow them to come to cars, workers, etc?
* Worker station distraction (I wish I had thought of that, but hadn't until you mentioned it)

Without putting a lot of thought into it I see the following as being a start for a potential "policy"

* First, figure out what (if any) impact this has on our liability coverage
* Set a cap per event for drones (First come, first serve?)
* Drone pilot must register either in advance and/or check in at bus or something. We can say "no" to you without explanation. Your drone rights can be revoked at any time.
* Drone pilot must sign a release saying you are responsible for personal and property damages.
* Gate waver updated to include mention/warn about potential drone use (may conflict with boilerplate required by insurance company).
* Only fly where pedestrians/spectators can walk. So no flying directly over the course, etc.
* X amount of distance from people, cars, etc. at all times. Effectively a low altitude limit. That might help mitigate distraction issues as well.
* Your drone goes down in a bad spot and you can't retrieve it... Find it after the event. We don't stop the event to allow you to retrieve.
* No 100% autonomous drones (i.e. programmed to recognize your car and follow it, GPS waypoints, etc). Someone needs to be in control.
* Exceptions can be made by the club/event organizer as needed (such as for special promotion videos, etc.) that may allow drone to get closer to car or fly over course during runs.

With all that being said... I think it can be made to work and would love to see some video from one of our events.

Richard

There was a thread earlier this year on this subject. On the subject of drones, I didn't put the right link in that thread, but here is an example drone video from a CCA autox event at the PC earlier this year (for what it's worth):

http://vimeo.com/86278750

It doesn't play in Firefox for me, but works on in IE. Cheesy music and "artsy" speeded up in the beginning doesn't appeal to me, but I'm old. I was running during the session the drone was capturing video (M3 makes appearance a couple of times), but I never really paid much attention to it. In fact, nobody really paid attention to it. Now if it had crashed onto someone's car, I'm sure that would have changed. :o The drone was very lightweight and small, blades were not huge, etc. It didn't appear to have much mass at least.

wow, this has progressed far beyond my expectations, but I'm glad to see the positive comments about this. I'd like to at least start collecting some stock footage and then also start some interview processes. I think most of you have smart phones w/ video. All I need is answers to why you like doing this, what got you interested and what you think you've learned from being part of the club or what ever else you want to blurt out. Also, "because race car" is an acceptable answer!

I would suggest two videos or just one short one. 30s to 1min short advert w/o interviews and mostly actions shots and a few text overlays here and there. This is the attention grabbing video. Then you could have a longer one with more info, interviews etc. People are inundated with videos to watch online and 5 min is too long especially with interviews that will be hard to hold anyone's attention.

Vir corner workers are well acquainted with photography drones. Numerous groups have used them. They are only a minor distraction, animals, people, and other distractions don't prevent them from doing their job.

Having been involved in some video stuff at work (various attempts by others to capture things we do in my area, with less than limited success), my only suggestion is this:

Consider hiring (or coerce) a (semi-)professional to make a video. Otherwise the result will be less than desired.

On the other hand, there's nothing to be lost with an amateur volunteer effort!

Drone footage from NCCAR, Fayetteville, etc, would be awesome, but I wonder how the FAA would feel about us flying one at Danville. I could see how they might object to that.
