I'm 100% with Bernie here. When you have a new recurring party at your restaurant you'd think you would want to put your A game on it. This was a very poor showing by Tyler's.

I'm with these guys, and its truly a shame since the beer selection and food were both great. I thought the request for a credit card before ordering to be very strange and rather ironic since the whole point was supposedly to keep track of each customer and when it came time to get the bill it was obviously a complete failure at that. The mandatory tip really pissed me off after waiting 30+ minutes for a check, that was wrong, of course it was wrong in that I got a free beer so I didn't complain. :D They could potentially improve on the service, however I think the deal breaker is the noisy room, if people can't hear me speaking that is simply unacceptable. :D

So, I think the underlying issue here is the noise, just not conducive to holding a meeting in this room. I'd say rigth now that any futures meetings at Tylers is a no go.

If the underlying problem is the noise, how can we give up without at least trying the noise abatement solution they have for the room? What room WOULD be conducive to a meeting then? Rudino's is quiet b/c its a private room that the door opens on, and there is NOBODY else in the restaurant (for a reason if you ask me). I hear two complaints: noise, and service.

They sort of screwed the pooch on the service. I would bet a curtain would help the noise problem a lot, but as someone else mentioned, a poor service performance for a new group is a pretty terrible showing.

I would say we ask them if we could simply arrange to order at the bar and identify ourselves as being with THSCC (as far as reaching the minimum $ amount required for the room). That way, food/beer delivery doesn't interrupt the meeting either. To me, thats what Rudino's had going for it. Simple "order at the register" style service instead of wait service. Service for 33 people all eating/ordering at one time is always gonna suck, there's just no way around it. The built in tip is b/c they realize that, and don't want their servers to get screwed by large groups.

I still love Tyler's, the beer there is great, and the service is normally EXCELLENT, but they definitely failed this time around. My only suggestion is lets make sure we have an actual viable alternative before we abandon the idea. I wasn't particularly enamored with any of the other ideas that were thrown out there, and as has been stated previously, talking to the manager about our concerns and giving them a chance to remedy their previous mistakes could probably go a long ways towards improving things. Is a pool hall really going to have better service/noise conditions? With as many unspoken complaints about the food at Rudino's, are we really thinking El Rodeo is going to make people happy (its NOT really the best Mexican food IMO). I'm OK with people saying they want to try other places before deciding permanently, but I think its a bit unfair to not at least voice our complaints to Tyler's and see what they are willing to do to address them before abandoning them.

Just a thought, I was one of the first 5 people there and it was apparent to me right away that the "noise" was going to be a problem. Brice, maybe they could hang the curtain for you one weekend afternoon and you should be able to tell even with an empty room if it's going to help or not. If it doesn't....then you have your answer.

It was about 7:10 at the "young folks" table the other night when our server came around for another round of beers and we asked about food. I wasn't clear if someone had asked him to wait to take food orders or if they had chosen to hold off....but I pretty much insisted that he start taking them right then. As long as people get there early and get their food orders in when they first sit down, that problem would probably go away. I don't know what to suggest for the payment issue though.

I did enjoy the food and beer the other night, but could go either way on trying it again. Like Brice though, I can't say I'm crazy about any of the other options with maybe the exception of Randy's so far.

Despite being a pool junky, I HATE pool halls. Most have got past the no smoking rule because they are clubs ($1 lifetime membership) and/or serve too little food to be considered a restaurant. Regardless, they make you smell not just like an ashtray, but musty, stale, old cigarette butts (ie ASS)....and sometimes it takes 2 showers to get rid of it.

I love Mexican food so if they have big ole Dos Equis and some good carnitas then I'll be good to go. Otherwise, I think Randy's is still a viable choice.

Another thought regarding the noise at Tylers (assuming they can get the service part in order, which I think they can).....people just need to STFU. If side conversations are needed, then get there even before 6:30 and hang out at the bar and catch up with other members etc etc. 6:30-7:30 can be social time in the room and eating. Then when 7:30 rolls around, come into the room and zip it till the meeting is done. Seems easy enough to me.

The noise problem at Tyler's was a physical one, concrete floor hard walls and ceilings make every small noise bounce around the room and bunch of small noises becomes a roar, a curtain may help, but I doubt it is going to make a huge impact. I don't think the "zip it" idea is going to work James, we are a social club as much as a car club and if I can't carry on a few conversations at the monthly meeting over a meal and a couple beers, I'd just as soon not go. I stopped by Blinco's yesterday for happy hour and checked out their setup. The room is no larger than Tyler's maybe a touch smaller, but a much better setup. Carpet floors, acoustic ceiling panels and wood paneling eliminate the noise problem. The tables/chairs are smaller, so even if the room is slightly smaller I think it could actually accommodate more people. Not that we use such things often, but they have three flat panel displays in the room and a separate sound system for the room and it has privacy doors. The food/beer selection isn't as good as Tyler's, but looked to be pretty decent and Wednesday nights are $2.50 pint nights. Their conference room does adjoin the pool/game room there, but I didn't notice any bad smells. The staff seemed friendly and eager to have us there and there was no mention of a minimum. It doesn't offer the convenience of paying/ordering first like Rudino's and the room isn't huge, so its not ideal, but it might be worth a shot. The location is also a bit more convenient for many, particularly our secretary, though obviously no location is going to be ideal for everyone.

Les,
I really appreciate you thinking of me and the freakishly long drive over to Tyler's. That being said, as I mentioned earlier, Bowie comes from Wilson, so one night a month won't kill me, no matter where we go. I will say that something in the US70/I-540 area is appealing. Probably pretty easy for most with the interstate, and certainly not such a long haul for us. Hope maybe we will give Blinco's a try.

quiet, efficient and cheap. that is what i ask for. i am not a fan of loud loud places..
The noise was just too much for me, and the service was so slow i actually went out to watch, the guys play pool so i could hunt down the waiter.not enjoyable. at least the food was good.

so, the local BMW chapter also used rudinos off of Miami and now they too are looking for a new location. The place now closes at 4p and the building is for sale...

The bimmer guys are headed up to

Manchester's Grill (www.manchestersgrill.com)
9101 Leesville Road (Pine Crest shopping Center, at the far right-end) [map]
Raleigh 27613, This is only one mile south of I-540, exit #7 on Leesville Road.

Anyone familiar w/ this place?

If its similar to the Manchster's Grill that used to be on Alexander Dr in Durham (which it appears to be), the food is pretty good and although they didn't have a BIG beer selection, what they have is good.

a few places i thought of... i dont really know anything about them in terms of capacity, or private lounge. but who knows

lynn wood grill just opened up again, near raleigh grande theater.

lafayette village grill in Raleigh. Falls/540 area. just opened a few months ago.

tribeca grill/tavern. its the old michael deans in north raleigh. when it was michael deans, they had 2 private rooms, same owners so perhaps they kept the rooms. but may be on the expensive side.
