i dunno, i think i looked pretty good on the front page of the N&O. :poke:

Lemons racing has perception problem as well, even with some of the folks here. The difference is Jay and Co. have plenty of customers and (until the lawyers get ahold of it) they are likely be running well into the future...perception be damned.

And you know that N&O photo op still gets my goat! :x

I think I fixed the link shortly after Chuck's post.

FYI for a long course SCCA Region had a solution for Pleasanton. Once a year (December) they ran an event in the "Winter Slush Series" (NO snow or slush since this was CA) called the "Rubber Chicken Memorial Endurocross" that consisted of many laps for something like 5 - 8 minutes (I don't recall). However with manual steering it sure got tiring in my Z or even in the Lotus. Lots of fun assuming no rain (rainy season).

I know that in years past that any type of promotion was frowned upon. For example if a newspaper might contact the club to do an article, that there was a general attitude of “we don’t want or need the publicity”. I think (?) part of that was fear out of being portrayed badly and it hurting potential or current relationships with site managers.

This was the attitude when I joined way back in 1999. I wondered why we didn't want any "press" and when I asked the officers at the time explained it to me just as you stated. Of course back then if you didn't pre-register ASAP you were wait-listed, but times have changed.

Like it or not there is still a stigma against what we do, which is why sites are getting almost impossible to find. We all know this perception by outsiders is 100% wrong, but perception is very hard to change.

Much of that had to do with not wanting too many people at the events which would have required changes to format etc. I never understood that either because if you are not cultivating new blood, the club will eventually die off as people age, have kids and the stuff that revolves around them, expense, etc. Marketing is good (otherwise we would not have commercials for any product under the sun) and it would be helpful to cultivate a local site.

I wonder if you told Graham that he only had to drive 15-30 minutes to the event, would have a great chance to get 4-5 timed runs and could get 5 or 6 good course walks in; would his attitude change?

Yes it would. It would be a big win in my book.

I still would have stopped for a couple of years when i first got focused on track. Now I want a blend and would like to try and get excited about autocross again. I'm even going to drive a car that is NOT a Corvette or GM product... (seriously I'm not running the Vette, I know this is hard to believe.)

The night series worked for a couple of reasons. The first being location, the second simplicity of the course (had to be since we had about 60 minutes to set up everything and I mean everything...course, bus, parking, etc). There were no long drivers meetings, no badgering over the PA. Don't get me wrong, it was competitive as hell.

The night series was a lot of fun. I got to run it for 1 year and was very disappointed when we lost that site and it killed the night series. I was fine with courses setup there. You guys made some creative designs on limited real estate and dealing with light poles. I even volunteered to help you setup the courses Jim and had fun doing that too :-) I really liked the low key let's just setup a course and run.

Another really good thing for the club about the night series was volunteers, since we are on that too. You didn't just sign up and run the night series. You had to be "invited" and it was because you actually did real things for the club that needed to be done. That incentive was a big win for the club.

Now the closest site is Sanford, still an hour drive from Raleigh. You figure Laurenburg and now Danville are two hour drives from Raleigh! Forget it. You are not going to get new people to drive two hours to Virginia or two hours to BFE Laurinburg to try autocross.

You aren't going to get old people excited to come back either. I know how far out in BFE L'burg is and the site is in too bad a shape for me to be bothered with it. Like Steve, I'm not trashing my suspension going there. Greenville is further than I want to drive to run on a postage stamp. Don't be insulted people that is my opinion and why I don't want to go to those sites. Danville I can deal with but yeah still far to drive. Sanford. Honestly you could run all the events at Sanford and I would be happy. I know that's not fair to ones that don't live in Raleigh. You folks east that like Greenville site cause you get a break on travel. That is understandable. I'm considering going up to VMP cause if that site is still in good shape then it's worth the drive for how big a lot it is.

I think after loosing Miles the whole site piece took a hit simply because that function got blended/dumped on the AX VPs as another thing to do. It really should have stayed with 1 person who was constantly trying to cultivate new sites and keeping in good graces with existing sites.

BTW Jim: I took no offense to your comments in the other post. My comments about the volunteering were at some other comments made.

Graham,

VMP is still pretty good. Some of the bumps may be a little worse but when I changed springs back to what I ran before going to STIFF springs the car was just fine. FYI my wheel rates for you suspension nerds were equal to the corner weights. Now they are back to about 50% of corner weights.

If you go to the NASA event keep in mind that Felton frequently includes a 1st gear skid pad. It was fun actually . . . which surprised me a little. Of course with a dry sump and a "vertical" engine losing oil pressure even at 1.4 g or more is NOT a concern.

As you know, bring your walking shoes!

Ryan can you split off this "let's fix L'burg discussion". It needs its own topic. Also if you look in the Staff Section I started a thread on this L'burg repair in about 2007. We started looking at what it would take to do it and how we wanted to go about it. Maybe you can cut/paste some of both threads into a new one?

I'd still like to continue this thread in discussing the idea of 1/2 day events and other ideas on that.

So back to 1/2 days...

One thing other clubs do, and we half attempted it before. Each event the order of run groups is swapped. So instead of being stuck in the run/work 1/3 or 2/4 every event because of your car class. The club rotates every event. At least that way those that want to leave early can after session 3. Other clubs do this all the time and it is a given that you alternate regardless oh how many people sign up in any class.

If you posted the run order on the bus before registration then people know what the deal is. I would even change my car classing at the bus to always move to 1/3. I'm not worried about season standings. I'd gladly bounce between whatever classes the car fits in that runs 1/3. At least that is a start on something. Today the run groups are posted after registration closes.
